How to: Resize a photo (jpg, gif)
Photo Images are converted by Boston.com into the JPEG format and resized into two sizes: 100 X 75 pixels (thumbnails) and 325 X 255 pixels. It is recommended that the original photo image size be greater than or equal to 325 X 255 pixels for improved image resolution. The image layout must have a horizontal orientation.

When placing an ad, you'll be asked to add your photos. Click the "browse" button, select the image from its location on your hard drive, and hit OK. When you have added the image you wish to upload, click "upload" and the image will be appear with your ad.
Instructions to resize your photo using a free program (PC only):
Paste below into a web browser or click it:
- select "Work with photo editor"
Program will open or click on icon to open it.
In the program, go to file > open - select your image to be edited and select open.
Go to > Edit > resize - set your width ONLY…the height size will adjust automatically.
Once file is the correct size (325 X 255 pixels), go to > File > Save as

This process will help you to resize your photos to upload to realestateads.boston.com or to cars.com to post with your ad. On program you can use is called VCW VicMan's Photo Editor and it is a free application for editing photos. This will only work on a PC. Of course if you have Photoshop or Photoshop Elements or any other graphic software on your computer, its probably best to use what you have, utilizing the help menus if necessary.
(*Note: Both systems will resize images to fit, but if the file size is larger than 1 megabyte, you might encounter a problem with timing out if you have a slow internet connection. Photos around 500 to 800K should have no problems.)

Save downloaded file to desktop. After download is complete, click on the icon.
- next box select .jpg
- Select finish
Pictures to be edited should reside on your desktop and should be saved to the desktop as well.
When saving, name the file differently from the original so that you'll have a backup.
Example: Width is set to 256, unit should be pixels in the pulldown.
256 pixels wide is approximately 2.85 inches wide.
(Note: images will look distorted going from a smaller size to a larger size so start with a larger original file and crop to correct size.)
Save as file type should be .jpg (or gif if it's a graphic or logo)
Name file one word with no spaces. (use a diff. name than original file)
A box will popup for a .jpg for quality. Set size at 50 or higher and select save.
