Internet entrepreneur turned restaurateur Lowell Gray has put his seven-bedroom Mediterranean-style villa in the East Point section of Nahant on the market for $5.95 million. The house was built in the late 1930s in the Art Moderne style as a summer residence for Boston financier F. Haven Clark and his wife, Francis . The Clarks used the house for the wedding of their daughter Anne to John Roosevelt, the youngest son of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, who both attended the wedding, according to newspaper reports of the time.
During the transformation, the stucco house was renovated and now includes 8 1/2 baths, a 3,000-bottle wine cellar, and a dining room that overlooks the ocean and has a built-in aquarium. The master bedroom suite includes a balcony, and the library has butternut wood paneling and built-in shelves. The heated four-car garage has a one-bedroom apartment. Lanse Robb of LandVest Inc. in Boston has the listing.
Gray, who sold his Lynn Internet company, Shore.Net, in 2000, has since opened the upscale German-style Oxford Street Grill in Lynn with chef David Fitzgerald. He also has developed several properties in downtown Lynn for residential use, although he said he's ``focusing all my attention on the restaurant.
``People said I was crazy for coming to downtown Lynn . . . that's what people told me about the Internet," said Gray.
The 2.3-acre property has an oceanfront pool with a cabana, a private beach that is across from a private island (uninhabitable, as the deed points out), and what the listing terms a ``vineyard and an orchard."
