CARVER - Middleborough may one day have a casino. And Plymouth will have more houses, businesses, and condos. Here, they hope to always have cranberries.

Town administrator Richard J. LaFond said that in study after study dating back to the 1970s, residents have endorsed continued support of the cranberry industry as a way of maintaining Carver's rural environment.

But Carver still works as a bedroom community because commuter rail is available in neighboring towns and an upgraded Route 44 gives quick access to Route 3 and Boston and Cape Cod, he said.

"It really is a nice little place down here without some of the problems that you experience by living on the coast or having mass transportation going through," LaFond said.

Still, the town is investing $7 million to build a municipal water supply for a commercial district in the north end of town near the intersections of Route 44 and 58 to draw some commercial development, said LaFond. Homeowners, however, will continue to bear the bulk of the tax burden, he said.

"We don't want to see it grow too big, too soon," LaFond said.

He said Carver residents do not want a casino in nearby Middleborough, fearing it will overwhelm town services and roads.

On a recent week, Realtor.com listed 101 single-family homes, ranging from $179,900 for a two-bed, one-bath, 560-square-foot home to $900,000 for a three-bed, two-bath 2,464-square-foot home on 12 acres.

Median price of a single-family home through October was $290,000, according to Warren Group, which publishes real estate information.
