Homeowners facing foreclosure can seek assistance from local nonprofits and counseling agencies

MassHousing, a state agency, advises people to call the Homeownership Foreclosure Prevention Foundation at 1-888-995-HOPE (4673), a national 24-hour hot line that provides free counseling. Counselors refer people to local nonprofit agencies that can provide assistance.
The state Department of Housing and Community Development publishes foreclosure assistance agencies by community on its website, mass.gov/dhcd. Look under Key Resources.
Action Inc., a nonprofit in Gloucester, assists Cape Ann residents. 978-283-7874.
Chelsea Restoration Corp. assists residents of the Chelsea/Revere area. 617-889-2277.
Community Teamwork Inc., based in Lowell, provides counseling in the Merrimack Valley and North Shore. 978-459-0551
Haverhill Community Action provides help for residents of greater Haverhill. 978-373-1971
Lynn Housing Authority and Neighborhood Development, which manages the city's housing programs, is available at 781-477-2800
