It's not difficult to picture cattle coming over the hill instead of the playground now perched alongside this farmhouse that is set back from the road and its modern-day neighbors. Although updated by current and past owners, the home maintains a basic pastoral farmhouse feel, while adding a striking two-story modern family room. Period details include bull's-eye glass panels beside the front door, red and white toile wallpaper in the entry representing colonial farmers, a kitchen with wood ceiling, multiple beams, and worn wide-pine plank floorboards. Despite the kitchen's rustic character, it's comfortable and functional, with bright white cabinets, tile backsplash, stainless appliances, and track spotlights.

Adjacent is a banquet-size dining room that also maintains the older design, with exposed beams, wainscoting, chair rails, and crown moldings, all painted in warm burnt red and putty colors. The big surprise comes after passing through the living room with its exposed brick chimney and stepping down into the modern family room with fieldstone fireplace and bar with shellacked pine. Here the ceiling soars two dramatic stories and the outside wall has an unusual arrangement with glass French doors, above which are stacked tall fixed-pane windows, crowned with a half-round window. An almost-theatrical staircase with winding balcony leads to the bedrooms, passing a lovely stained glass.

The master bedroom has a cathedral ceiling, beams painted white, and hand-painted French wallpaper in a yellow floral pattern. "It's an interesting antique with lots of original character without sacrificing modern-day comforts," said listing agent Lee-Ann Yolin of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage.
