We're Not Your Mother's Broker

Posted by Rona Fischman August 6, 2007 10:41 AM

The Phoenix took at look at real estate agents and their creative lifestyle. My first reaction was, yeah right...rock star, that’s me.

But then I thought about it. My office is full of people who are not your mother’s brokers.

First, we all have had other careers; we have a former social worker, film critic, restaurant manager, prison inmate advocate, graphic designer, and deaf-blind rehab specialist.

We hold lots of degrees, none in business; among them are counseling, divinity and film. One of us worked in Newark shortly after the riots; one lived in Japan. Our off-duty activities include political activism, interfaith activism, catering, historic preservation, adaptive design, and photography. So, we are not boring to ride around with. We know how to have fun, just not until 4 am, anymore. Rock stars we are not.

The article underlines why so many people gravitate to real estate: it is easy to get a license. However, it is not easy to stay in the business. When one works on commission, one either gets things done or goes broke.

So whether you choose a rock star or an ex-divinity student as your broker, choose someone with experience who didn’t just fall into the job. Choose someone who gets things done.
