Boston's housing market has company

Posted by Kimberly Blanton September 5, 2007 02:39 PM

Here's one place Boston's housing market is not the biggest loser: House prices have fallen more in Detroit and San Francisco over the past year.

According to Freddie Mac, one of the nation's largest buyers of home mortgages, second-quarter house prices in the Detroit and San Francisco metropolitan areas declined 3 percent over the prior year.

The Boston area's prices dropped just 1.4 percent.

Seattle slowed in the second quarter but prices in that booming city were still 10 percent higher than a year ago. And Dallas-area prices gained 4.5 percent over the year.

Nationwide, house prices were up 3.3 percent over the year. But in the second quarter, that gain slowed to just 0.4 percent, sharply below first-quarter price gains.
