Getting there from here

Posted by Binyamin Appelbaum April 9, 2008 03:13 PM

Rejoice ye homeshoppers: A handy new Web site makes it easy to plot the most efficient way to hit six open houses on a Sunday afternoon. Simply input as many addresses as you like, and the site produces a Google map with a suggested itinerary, and a complete set of directions.

The aptly named IdealRoute is hosted by the Virginia Association of Realtors, but it works for addresses anywhere in the United States. (In fact, it also works for addresses in Canada, and quite possibly elsewhere too.) The site is billed for use by real estate agents, but it's yet another example of how the Web can make it easier to shop for homes on your own.

Pictured is an itinerary for visiting several Boston branch libraries.

(A tip of the hat to the Inman News Blog, where I first read about the site.)

  1. You can accomplish the same thing directly at Google Maps with more (and better) functionality. With this IdealRoute each time you want to add an additional address (after an initial optomized route) you will need to reenter ALL address plus the new additional address ... not particularly helpful.

Google Maps will allow you to continuously add additional addresses to your route, and you can simple shuffle locations in the lefthand sidebar to optomize your route in real-time. You can go a step beyond that by dragging-and-dropping individual portions of the actual highlighted map in the main map window -- useful if you know of a particular reason (construction, traffic, etc.) to avoid a particular portion of the Google-generated route.

  1. Jay Mar,

Thanks for the comment. The difference is that this site optimizes the route for you, whereas on Google you arrange the order manually. But I do agree that Google is a more flexible tool.

  1. Like I have the time to do all that?

I do it a much easier way. I call my agent on Wednesday and tell her I want to see all the listings in my price range, the next Sunday.

On Friday afternoon, an email appears in my Inbox with a route; attached is a Google map with each property listed, along with a brief description, price, and time.

I can change my own oil, but why bother?
