A new reason to move

Posted by Rona Fischman June 5, 2008 03:55 PM

There is a new reason to move. Until about three of four years ago; I heard the same old reasons to move:
we are getting married; I just got divorced; we are having a child; we are having another child; we have a child, or two, who need room to play; our children are grown, now we want to live the way we want; we hate the city and want to go to the suburbs; we hate the suburbs and want to go to the city; we hate our landlord; I want more room to (fill in the blank) garden, woodwork, weave, paint, cook, store my clothes, store my food, play in my yard...

The new reason to move is Dance Dance Revolution. I have had clients who want to move because they can’t play Dance Dance Revolution at home. I have had clients who want to move because someone above them plays Dance Dance Revolution.

OK, so this is not so new...I have heard the same noise complaints about small children in apartments and condos. Parents are uncomfortable that their child is waking the neighbors or neighbors want to escape the noisy child above. But Dance Dance Revolution is a game, not family. Am I missing something?

I am curious about whether readers are bothered by Dance Dance Revolution players where they live. Do you play? Are you concerned about your neighbors; are you annoyed at your neighbors?

What other noisy behaviors could drive you from your apartment?

  1. We have first floor neighbors that use their apt as a practice space. Piano, guitar, bongos, violins. And an opera singer. They choose to pratice at 11 pm on weeknights, for hours. They, nor our landlord, respond when kindly or rudely asked to stop. I've had nights where I'm simply trying to watch a tv show and my entire apartment (2 floors above them) is shaking with what sounds like the sound track to a b&w 1970's Italian film. This was cute at first, for story-telling purposes. Now I just want to cry. And move!!

  1. I think DDR is a thing of the past - it's all about the Wii now.

  1. This is too funny. One of the first things we said when we got our Wii was that it will be great when we move and have a larger family room.

Now I won't whack my husband in a fierce game of tennis!

  1. My wife and I bought a house in February and we couldn't wait to get out of our apartment. We had neighbors above us who apparently move about their apartment by hopping becuase we always heard thudding whenever they moved around. We could also hear our next-door neighbors scrubbing their bathtub at 12:30 AM.

  1. We have EXACTLY this issue with Dance Dance Revolution ... we call it Jack Jack Hammer upstairs ... it's a nightmare!

  1. All of you! Fight back dont move and let a noisy disrespectful neighbor drive you away from your home. A quiet mutually respectful living space is essential for well being. People moving around is one thing but using electronic equipment at what would be normally "quiet time" is not cool. Put your stereo speakers on a shelf as close to the ceiling as possible, or lay them on the floor facing down if its the downstairs neighbors, turn the stereo volume up to 9 and leave the house! All this should be done at 4am. A nice quiet walk on the beach or nature trail for a couple hours while doing this will be very therapeutic for you. And when you get home and your neighbors are in the hall, you can just say, " Ohhhh! how could I have been so rude!"

  1. This is also an issue with Rock Band - the drums can be loud ... in our case, we had the game, but were so paranoid about annoying our downstairs neighbors, we rarely played it ... we were moving anyway, but when we were looking at apartments, we found one that had 2 floors, (2nd and 3rd floor of 2 family) so we could have friends over to play without disturbing the neighbors on the first floor!

We are perhaps overly considerate about noise, having lived above and below people who were VERY inconsiderate. My favorite was the guy who lived above us, had hardwood floors and refused to put down area rugs, and one night when he woke us up by having sex with his girlfriend on a bed that rumbled across the floor and kept knocking the walls, had the gall to be upset with us because we pounded on the ceiling for him to shut up ... his big complaint being that his girlfriend was now too embarassed to spend the night at his place ... what a tool ... ths is the same guy who had a stationary bicycle with a fly-wheel fan that would actually make our apt vibrate
