The joy of a crackling fire

Posted by Rona Fischman December 23, 2008 03:02 PM

Starting with the winter solstice, the days get longer from now until June. That’s not such a warming thought, since the winter is just beginning. So, what do you need? Light! Fire!

Today, let’s talk about fireplaces. Do the short days of the year make you yearn for a roaring fire? Do you have an opinion about which is better, wood-burning or gas?

For some of my buyers, fireplaces are a must. Some don’t care. Some don’t like them. Homeowners, did you want a fireplace? Did you get one? Do you use it?

If you are part of the fireplace-less majority, there are alternatives. In 1966, WPIX in New York began airing a film loop of a crackling fire, called The Yule Log. It was a hit in the New York metropolitan area.

Here’s the WPIX crackling fire video. And a quieter version; and another one. Here's one with old-fashioned music. And one with more contemporary songs. If you want the full video trailer version, here's one.

With or without a fireplace, I hope you have enough warmth and light.

  1. Has to be wood! Would not buy a house without a fireplace. I cannot explain the logic behind this, just my preference.

We use ours a couple of times a week during the winter. Not really for warmth, as most fireplaces actually cool the house more than they warm it unless you have a fancy insert and an outside source of fresh air for the fireplace.

  1. Instead of the Yule Log, I guess that we will just have to call this the "Yule Blog" ! Happy Holidays!

  1. Has anyone bought one of the inserts to reflect heat? I'm considering getting one as we really tend to use our fireplace a lot.

I also agree that wood fireplaces are best! If I wanted a gas fire I would just go turn on my stove burners. That's pretty much what it looks like.

We weren't looking for a house with a fireplace specifically - didn't care either way - in fact, being FHB we were in no position to be picky about those kinds of details. Four solid walls, a roof, and a dry basement were more important :-)

But now that we have one we can't imagine not having it!

  1. When i was looking to buy, my agent would always shake her head when she showed me a home with a nice fireplace in the living room and I would say "It's right where the TV should go." And don't say you can mount it above the fireplace - that is way too high for my tastes.

  1. Has to be a fireplace, rather have that then a TV any day. And wood burning Rumford style, so it actually works.

I don't own a TV. Life is too short to watch other people living it.

  1. Agree with charles...we dumped the TV from the living room. Fireplace is better. Tv is in the family room.
