Are homeowners jealous of renters?

Most of us apparently think owning a home is no longer necessary to live the American Dream, a new survey finds.

More than 61 percent of adults across the country believe that "renters can be just as successful as owners at achieving the American Dream," according to a survey just released by The MacArthur Foundation's How Housing Matters initiative.

And it is not just renters saying this, with 59 percent of homeowners agreeing with this statement.

As a matter of fact, nearly half of all owners - 45 percent - see themselves renting again at some point, the MacArthur Foundation survey finds.

Overall, the survey finds a growing disenchantment with owning, matched by a rising interest in apartment living.

A majority - 57 percent - agreed that "buying has become less appealing, while 54 percent believe that "renting has become more appealing" than ever before.

Moreover, there is growing support for a shift in federal housing policy, which has long favored homeowners, to include more support for rental housing, the survey finds.

Even so, there are some mixed messages as well. After all, even as many homeowners see themselves renting someday, seven out of ten renters polled say they aspire to own someday.

Who knows, maybe it's just that old idea of wanting what you don't have.

Or maybe we are truly seeing a seismic shift.

The survey is based on telephone interviews (conducted by Hart Research Associates) with 1,433 adults in late February and early March.

Pollster Peter D. Hart had this to say in a press release that accompanied the survey results.

"America is going through a transformational period in which the old forms and systems are changing, and the unconventional is becoming more conventional and even fashionable."

What say you? Are you one of these unhappy homeowners daydreaming about renting again someday? Are we truly in a "transformational period" right now, or is this just more hot air?
