Families with children need not apply?

Here's another sad tale of a young family facing harassment in the housing market.

One reader recalls being forced out of the condo complex after the association began passing rules aimed at punishing such egregious offenses as bike riding and playing.

Here's what MichGrBos had to say on the comment board on my recent post about housing discrimination still being rampant.

While not the landlord directly, the condo association (which included the landlord) created discriminatory rules for renters and owners under 55, particularly if they had children. No riding bikes on the property. No playing in common areas. Bikes or toys had to be taken inside (could not be left on decks even). The list would grow after every monthly meeting. Our landlord gave us the option to buy and we said, "No thank you." Moving to a house with our 10 year old son was a better option than dealing with condo associations and discriminatory rules.

OK, it is fast-becoming a major crime to have children who like to play, especially here in increasingly geriatric Massachusetts, where we seem to have more than our share of grumps, especially on condo association boards.

Of course, it would be much better for everyone involved if the kids just sat on the couch and played video games all day long, then no one would have their precious peace and quiet disturbed by some energetic little tike rolling by on a big wheel.

In fact, it's amazing what condo associations and landlords get away with, though we are starting to see the feds bring some cases.

Here's a 2010 case where a Methuen condo association was forced to cough up $150,000 in fines after being taken to court by the U.S. Justice Department.

Families were hit with $500 fines if their children were caught playing ball or tag in common areas.

The father of three young children, it's the kind of stuff that makes my blood boil. What about you?
