Sure, Kendall Square is bursting at the seams with new lab construction.
If you are a biotech guy or gal, there's no place you probably would rather commute to every morning.
But would you want to live there? In fact, is once rough and tumble East Cambridge really so hot and hip now that it beats out every other neighborhood in the Boston area as the ideal place to live?
Back in my bachelor days, probably the single ugliest apartment I ever walked through was near Kendall Square and the neighborhood, beyond the research complexes and the neat indie movie theater, was nothing to speak of then.
Think about that and now consider this as well: East Cambridge tops Redfin's list of the top five hottest Boston-area neighborhoods to buy in.
Apparently page views of East Cambridge listings on the Redfin site have soared 45 percent in 2013 compared with the year before.
Here's what Redfin broker Matt Zborezny writes about why he thinks East Cambridge is so special now.
Several factors are all coming together at the same time in and around East Cambridge that will really influence the neighborhood's growth over the next few years. Tech giants, such as Google, Amazon and Microsoft have all set up shop in neighboring Kendall Square, and the biotech industry is growing nearby as well. M.I.T. owns a lot of land in Kendall Square, where it's developing retail spaces, restaurants and eateries, entertainment spots, additional housing and research institutions that will transform the area into a more lively place. And with the expansion of the Green Line, the relocation of Lechmere Station and the NorthPoint developments, public transportation in East Cambridge will be more accessible and aesthetically pleasing to the community.
Redfin's other local picks were interesting as well, highlighting some of the more affordable and liveable mini hoods inside Boston and neighboring Somerville and Quincy.
The Great Meadows neighborhood in Lexington, No. 2, with an average listing price of $507,500; Winter Hill in Somerville (one of Whitey's old stomping grounds), No. 3, $345,000; Brook Farm area along the VFW Parkway in West Roxbury, No. 4, $413,000; and the Adams Shore neighborhood in Quincy, No. 5, $311,000.
