What do a funky looking modern home overlooking a Weymouth pond, a sizable cape in Peabody and what's billed as a "lovely ranch" in Medway have in common?

All three listings are under $350,000, price reduced and holding open houses this weekend, according to a search I did on Realtor.com

OK, $350,000 is not exactly a magic number. It's just the rough limit of what you are going to be able to afford if you are pulling down the average, middle class income for the Boston area, say $80,000 to just $100,000.

There's stuff out there to look at, but you may want to brace yourself for a bit of a commute - at least if you work in Boston or Cambridge. And you had better like capes, ranches, split levels and cozy looking older homes.

Other homes sporting price cuts on view this weekend include a $267,500 ranch in Littleton, a $319,900 split-level in Wrentham, and a bulky looking, $339,900 colonial in Randolph. (All listings and open houses mentioned can be found on this link.)

On the super economy side, there is a tiny, 962-square-foot cape for sale in Beverly listed at $199,000, and 1,112-square-foot cape in Franklin priced at $279,900.

The funky looking Weymouth house by the pond is the most intriguing of the batch - I love old homes but have always had thing as well for 1970s modern style residential architecture. You know, the houses that look like they are all cubes and boxes and odd angles, with lots of windows and light.

Built in 1975, this Weymouth two-bedroom, two bath is relatively small - 1,200 square feet - and spread out over multiple levels. Looks like Whitman's Pond is right there in front.

Previously listed at $319,000, it was recently knocked down to $309,000.

It last sold for $269,900 back in 2003.

Here's the writeup:
