Here's a pretty sad/shocking/darkly amusing piece on what a million bucks gets you in various cities across the world.

San Francisco is the stingiest - spend a million and you will get just a little over 1,500 square feet, or about the size of a modest, 50s-style cape, according to a list compiled by Business Insider and being re-posted prominently by Slate and others.

Of course, Boston is No. 2 when on the stingy list - a million just barely get you across the 2,000-square-foot threshold.

In Denver, Austin, Miami, Portland and Charleston - all great cities to live in - its over 5,000 feet.

And Detroit? A whopping 83,000 square feet, or basically the entire entire neighborhood.
