NHL’s future stars on display

Several future NHL stars on were display earlier this month in the annual Super Series between Canada’s top junior leagues and Russia’s best young talent, held in three provinces. With top overall draft pick Nail Yakupov leading the way, Russia won the series (3-2-1) for the second time in the event’s 10-year history, though the goal differential was just plus-4.
Nov. 5 (Quebec): Russia 6, Team QMJHL 2
Andrei Vasilevski made 31 saves for Russia, which got two goals in each period, from six different goal scorers.
Nov. 7 (Quebec): Team QMJHL 5, Russia 2
The hosts scored less than a minute in and Jonathan Huberdeau (Panthers) put them ahead to stay with two goals in the second.
Nov. 8 (Ontario): Russia 2, Team OHL 1
Russia broke an 18-game skid against the OHL in the series by scoring twice in a 24-second span of the third. Bruins draft pick Malcolm Subban allowed no goals in 32 minutes before he was replaced.
Nov. 12 (Ontario): Team OHL 2, Russia 1
Ryan Strome (Islanders) got the Canadians going with a goal and assist, which made Yakupov’s late goal for Russia moot.
Nov. 14 (British Columbia): Team WHL 1, Russia 0
A shootout was needed to break the scoreless deadlock. Flames prospect Laurent Brossoit (30 saves) stopped all three shootout bids, while Russia’s Andrei Makarov (35 saves) denied just one.
Nov. 15 (British Columbia): Russia 5, Team WHL 2
Russia took the series by building a 4-1 lead through two periods. Mikhail Naumenkov had three of his four points in the series in the clincher.
