Cohasset pins Norwell

NORWELL -- Never underestimate the power of a good kicking game. And a little bit of luck. Cohasset (8-1) rode the advantage of good field position and a timely bounce to take a 7-0 victory over host Norwell, a win that assured the Skippers of a berth in the Division 5 playoffs as the South Shore League champion.

With 2:40 to play in the fourth quarter, Norwell (6-2-1) found itself pinned on its 6-yard line because of a tremendous punt by junior Joe Durkin.

After three unsuccessful plays left them standing at their 7, the Clippers were forced to go for it on fourth and 9. The decision was pressed upon Norwell head coach Jim Sullivan because of league tiebreakers. Had the Clippers punted and settled for a possible tie, they would have taken themselves out of the running for the league title, as they needed a win to take the crown.

John Mohan's pass was incomplete over the middle and Cohasset gained possession on the Norwell 7.

On second and goal with 1:05 remaining, senior tailback DeWayne Morris took the handoff and squirmed down to the 1, but the ball popped loose before he could cross the goal line and end the stalemate. Fortunately for the Skippers, teammate Sean Connolly was there to fall on it in the end zone. Connolly then split the uprights, giving Cohasset a 7-0 lead.

Norwell managed to bring it down to the Cohasset 38 in the final minute to make things exciting. But four consective incomplete attempts by Mohan and Co. left the Clippers a little short.

The jubilation following the game prompted Skipper coach Tony Rolfe to tell his players, "I want everybody to find someone who played defense tonight, and give him a hug." Which caused a giant pig-pile on Cohasset's defensive heroes.

"Our defense played better than I expected, as good as I had hoped," said Rolfe. "But we got lucky on that last play. It fell into the lap of our tight end Sean Connolly. I didn't even know, I thought DeWayne had got in."
