An electrifying run in MacArthur 'cap

NEW YORK -- Clever Electrician edged away in the final furlong for a 1 1/2-length victory in yesterday's General Douglas MacArthur Handicap at Belmont Park.

Top Shoter, the favorite in the six-horse field, was second, 5 1/4 lengths ahead of Mr. Determined. It was the first day of racing at Belmont following the conclusion of the Saratoga campaign Monday.

Clever Electrician, with Ramon Dominguez aboard, covered 7 furlongs in 1:21 2/5 over the fast track to earn $60,000 for Gumpster Stable. It was the fifth win in eight starts this year for the 5-year-old horse by Clever Trick.

Clever Electrician returned $6.30, $2.60, and $2.10. Top Shoter paid $2.60 and $2.10, and Mr. Determined was $2.10 to show.
