Reeling UConn pounded again

Lindsay Bowen dominated from the perimeter and Kelli Roehrig was outstanding in the paint as 10th-ranked Michigan State overwhelmed No. 11 Connecticut, 67-51, last night at the Hartford Civic Center.

Bowen scored 21 points, making five of seven shots from 3-point range. Roehrig had 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots for the Spartans (11-1).

It was the worst home loss for the Huskies (6-3) since dropping a 16-point decision to Miami Feb. 21, 1992. Barbara Turner led UConn with 16 points.

Duke 89, Rhode Island 63 -- Jessica Foley scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half to lead the second-ranked Blue Devils (12-1) over the Rams (2-8) in the first round of the Auburn (Ala.) Holiday Classic.

Foley made 6 of 10 shots -- including three 3-pointers -- for Duke, which led, 47-25, at halftime. Mistie Williams and Monique Currie added 14 points apiece.

Baylor 92, Montana St. 47 -- Sophia Young scored 19 points to lead the third-ranked Lady Bears, who made 58 percent of their shots in a victory at Waco, Texas. Baylor (10-1) shot a torrid 63 percent (19 of 30) in the first half and finished 35 of 60.

Oregon 62, Stanford 58 -- Andrea Bills had 18 points and 15 rebounds, and Oregon overcame a 14-point first-half deficit to upset the fifth-ranked Cardinal in Eugene, Ore.

Maryland 67, Massachusetts 63 -- Crystal Langhorne had 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead the 17th-ranked Terrapins over the Minutewomen in the first round of the Terrapin Classic in College Park, Md.

Washington 63, Arizona St. 55 -- Washington won its ninth straight at home against No. 21 Arizona State, getting 12 points from Kayla Burt in a victory in Seattle.

Rutgers 65, Tennessee 51 -- Freshman Matee Ajavon scored 20 points, and the No. 24 Scarlet Knights (7-2) held the eighth-ranked Lady Vols (8-3) to 16 first-half points en route to the victory at Piscataway, N.J.

Richmond 58, Dartmouth 55 -- The Big Green fell just short to Richmond in the first round of the Blue Sky Classic in Hanover, N.H.

Christina Campion led the 9-0 Spiders with 17 points and nine rebounds, and Saona Chapman added 14.

DePaul 75, Valparaiso 49 -- Khara Smith scored 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as the No. 19 Blue Demons (9-2) raced to a 38-18 halftime lead and outdistanced the Commodores (5-5) in the other opening-round game of the Blue Sky Classic.

Florida 66, Boston University 59 -- Bernice Mosby's 19 points and seven rebounds led the Gators in the first round of the State Farm Classic in Gainesville, Fla. The Terriers got 17 points each from Adrienne Norris and Rachael Vanderwal.

Stony Brook 70, Brown 54 -- Sarah Hayes led the Bears with 17 points and 10 rebounds, but a season-high 27 turnovers doomed Brown, which lost its third straight.

The Seawolves took the victory in the consolation match of the Sun & Fun Classic in Miami.
