The New York Yankees committed three errors, the final one leading to the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, and their 10-game winning streak was snapped with a 7-6 loss to the Mariners last night in Seattle.
Miguel Olivo's first hit of the series scored Jeremy Reed with two outs in the eighth, preventing the Yankees from their first 11-game winning streak in nearly 20 years.
The Yankees loaded the bases in the ninth, but Ron Villone struck out Jason Giambi on three pitches for the final out and his first save since 1999, when he pitched for Cincinnati.
Former Yankee Jeff Nelson (1-1) pitched 1{sbquo} innings for the win.
Alex Rodriguez hit his major league-leading 14th home run, a three-run shot, but the Yankees failed to hold leads of 4-0 and 6-2.
Angels 2, Indians 1 -- Jake Westbrook carried a two-hitter into the ninth inning and was two outs from his second career shutout when Los Angeles rallied over host Cleveland.
Nothing has been fair this season for Westbrook (1-7). The righthander has lost two complete games, dropped three one-run games, and hasn't gotten any help from Cleveland's sluggish offense. In his nine starts, the Indians have scored 19 runs.
Bartolo Colon (5-3) matched Westbrook for eight innings, allowing just one run and four hits.
White Sox 7, Rangers 0 -- Mark Buehrle won his sixth straight decision and Jermaine Dye doubled three times, once with the bases loaded, to help host Chicago beat Texas.
A.J. Pierzynski homered in his fourth consecutive game, and Paul Konerko also connected.
Buehrle (7-1) allowed nine hits over 7{sbquo} innings and got out of two early jams to run his career record against Texas to 7-0. The lefthander walked none and struck out two, leaving after giving up two singles in the eighth.
Orioles 7, Royals 4 -- Melvin Mora had two home runs and four RBIs, and visiting Baltimore took its sixth straight victory.
David Newhan also homered for the Orioles, who have hit seven home runs in the first two games of the three-game series and increased their major league-leading total to 60.
Tigers 6, Devil Rays 4 -- Dmitri Young homered and Omar Infante drove in two runs as host Detroit beat sloppy Tampa Bay.
The Devil Rays made three errors, leading to four unearned runs, in their fourth straight loss. Wil Ledezma (2-3) won for the first time since April 9, a span of five starts.
Twins 3, Blue Jays 2 -- Jacque Jones and Michael Cuddyer homered to lift Minnesota over Toronto in Minneapolis.
Cuddyer was 3 for 3, continuing his strong hitting in May (18 for 47, .383), and Kyle Lohse (3-2) scattered seven hits over six innings to give the Twins their second win by a starting pitcher in the last nine games.![]()
