PHILADELPHIA -- Antero Niittymaki stopped 33 shots for his second shutout of the playoffs as the Philadelphia Phantoms blanked the Providence Bruins, 3-0, in the second game of the Calder Cup semifinals last night.
Philadelphia leads the best-of-seven series, 2-0, with the third game scheduled for tomorrow in Providence.
Jeff Carter, R.J. Umberger, and Mike Richards had goals for Philadelphia, which remained undefeated at home (8-0) during the postseason. Hannu Toivonen made 22 saves for Providence, which outshot Philadelphia, 33-25.
Carter gave Philadelphia a 1-0 lead at 7:02 of the first period when he converted a pass from Ryan Ready behind the net for his team-leading 10th goal of the playoffs.
Niittymaki kept the Bruins off the board during a scoreless second period by stopping 14 shots, including a point-blank save on Jeff Daw following a giveaway in the Phantoms zone.
Umberger made it 2-0 just 29 seconds into the third when he picked up a loose puck near the right boards, skated in, and snapped a shot between Toivonen's pads.
Philadelphia controlled play early in the third period by registering the first 10 shots on goal before Providence managed its first.![]()
