Red Bulls keep postseason hopes alive

Teenager Josmer Jozy Altidore scored his third goal in four games off a fine feed from fellow rookie Marvell Wynne, giving the New York Red Bulls a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Fire last night in East Rutherford, N.J.

The victory gave a boost to the Red Bulls' playoff hopes, pushing their record to 8-11-11. The Fire, which have a stranglehold on the second playoff slot in the Eastern Conference, dropped to 12-10-8.

Altidore, who will turn 17 next month and made his debut with the club three weeks ago, broke a scoreless tie in the 60th minute when he knocked home a pass from Wynne past Fire goalkeeper Matt Pickens.

Crew 3, FC Dallas 1 -- Host Columbus had goals by Joseph Ngwenya, Jacob Thomas, and Jason Garey, but the Crew were eliminated from playoff contention.

The win by the Red Bulls kept the Crew (7-14-9) from reaching the playoffs for the second straight year.

Real Salt Lake 3, Wizards 3 -- Host Kansas City and Real Salt Lake fought to a tie, further complicating the playoff races in both the Eastern and Western conferences.

The Wizards (9-13-8) are tied for the final Eastern playoff spot with the Red Bulls. Real Salt Lake (10-13-7) remained in fifth place in the Western Conference but pulled to within 2 points of Colorado for the final berth.

Dynamo 1, D.C. United 0 -- Brian Ching's bicycle-kick shot in the 86th minute allowed host Houston (11-8-11) to clinch a Western Conference playoff spot.

Galaxy 3, Chivas USA 0 -- Landon Donovan, Peter Vagenas, and Alan Gordon scored to help host Los Angeles (10-14-6) move within 3 points of a playoff berth.
