Cowboys interviewing Gibbs, Turner

New Orleans defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs interviewed yesterday with the Dallas Cowboys about their head coaching vacancy. Gibbs, a former Cowboys assistant, was the third outside candidate to visit Valley Ranch for an interview since Bill Parcells retired Monday. San Francisco offensive coordinator Norv Turner was scheduled to interview today. Turner was the Cowboys' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 1991-93, when they won consecutive Super Bowls . . . Chris Palmer, the quarterbacks coach of the Cowboys, was hired as quarterbacks coach of the Giants, replacing Kevin Gilbride, who was promoted to offensive coordinator . . . Bengals receiver Chris Henry was released from jail after completing a two-day sentence for letting minors drink alcohol in a hotel room he had rented. Henry's guilty plea and two-day sentence settled the last of his four court cases . . . The Bengals, wracked by the arrests of Henry and several other players over the last year, will look more closely at the backgrounds of the players they draft, team president Mike Brown told The Cincinnati Enquirer. Nine players have been arrested in the last nine months . . . Jets coach Eric Mangini will be an in-studio guest on ESPN2's "Friday Night Fights" this week. Mangini used boxing philosophies to motivate his players this year, showing them fight films and having trainer Teddy Atlas address them.

Ryan expected to leave hospital
Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was expected to leave the hospital after medical tests for an undisclosed ailment came back normal, his son said. The 59-year-old strikeout king was admitted to Round Rock (Texas) Medical Center Friday for treatment of recurring symptoms of a preexisting medical condition. He was transferred to Houston for further evaluation, but Reid Ryan said his father was "feeling great." Reid Ryan declined to specify the condition, but said it was discovered when his father had double-bypass heart surgery in 2000 . . . Vaughn "Bing" Devine, the St. Louis Cardinals general manager who helped build teams that won three NL pennants and two World Series in the 1960s, died at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, said his widow, Mary Devine. He was 90. The Cardinals won World Series titles in 1964 and 1967, and the pennant in 1968.

Powell starts fast out of the blocks
Asafa Powell, the 100-meter world record-holder, opened his season with an impressive 400-meter run at the Queen's/Grace Jackson Invitational in Kingston, Jamaica. Powell was 10 meters ahead at one point and held off his rivals to win his heat in 47.67 seconds. He was fourth overall in the event. Michael Frater, the 100-meter silver medalist at the world championships, ran 50.40 and Trinidad & Tobago's Darrell Brown finished with 50.08 in the local meet. Sherone Simpson, the fastest woman in the world last season, won the 400 in 53.40 seconds. She finished ahead of Brigitte Foster-Hylton (54.44) and Nyoka Cole (55.01) . . . Bernard Lagat led from start to finish and won the 1,500 meters at the Norwich Union indoor meet in Glasgow for his first win as a US athlete, then took a victory lap carrying an American flag. Lagat, who won in 3 minutes 45.55 seconds to beat former Kenyan teammate Laban Rotich by slightly more than a second, switched to US citizenship after winning silver in the 1,500 meters at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Knicks' Cato seeks custody of son
New York Knicks center Kelvin Cato wants custody of his 6-year-old son, who was found living in a urine-soaked apartment with more than 30 cats last year in Beaverton, Ore. The boy's mother, Jennifer Gaines, 36, was convicted in Washington County Circuit Court of criminal mistreatment of her son and of animal neglect. She was sentenced this week to five years' probation and 100 hours of community service . . . Barbaro had a custom-made cast removed and underwent a procedure on his right hind leg, the same leg the Kentucky Derby winner shattered eight months ago in the Preakness . . . Petr Kalus scored twice, and David Krejci, Ben Walter, and Nate Thompson each had a goal as the Providence Bruins defeated the host Worcester Sharks, 5-2 . . . Ronda Rousey of Wakefield took her fourth European judo title with a gold medal at the British Open in London . . . Gump Worsley, the Hall of Fame goalie who didn't wear a mask until the final season of his 21-year NHL career, died at his home in Beloeil, The Canadian Press reported. He was 77.
