The Bruins' road to a postseason berth remains steep, but it would be more difficult today if two other teams also struggling for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference hadn't also squandered points last night.
The Islanders moved into sole possession of seventh place, a point ahead of Montreal and 8 up on Boston, but couldn't hold on to a late two-goal lead before losing to St. Louis in overtime. The Rangers, 2 points ahead of the 12th-place Bruins, also relinquished a two-goal lead and lost in a shootout to Pittsburgh.
Blues 3, Islanders 2 -- Lee Stempniak's power-play goal 25 seconds into overtime gave St. Louis a come-from-behind victory that spoiled Ryan Smyth's debut on Long Island.
The Islanders were cruising to a 2-0 victory with less than three minutes left in the game when Jay McClement and Petr Cajanek scored in a 38-second span to force overtime.
Smyth, acquired from Edmonton Tuesday, assisted on Mike Sillinger's first-period goal and played a key role in Marc-Andre Bergeron's second-period goal. After the goal was knocked off its moorings, Smyth used his skate to put it back in place before Bergeron's shot deflected in.
Penguins 4, Rangers 3 -- Sidney Crosby scored the only goal of the shootout, and Pittsburgh used three special-teams goals in the third period to rally to a victory over New York at Madison Square Garden.
Crosby, the last of six shooters, squeezed a shot between Henrik Lundqvist's pads.
Pittsburgh erased a two-goal deficit with shorthanded goals by Jordan Staal and Colby Armstrong, and forced overtime with Sergei Gonchar's goal with six minutes left in regulation.
Lightning 5, Capitals 4 -- Nick Tarnasky scored the lone shootout goal in the 10th round, goalie Johan Holmqvist was perfect during the tiebreaker, and visiting Tampa Bay improved to 10-1 in shootouts.
Canucks 4, Coyotes 3 -- Markus Naslund scored with 4:14 left in the third period as host Vancouver beat Phoenix.
Wild 5, Oilers 0 -- Third-string goalie Josh Harding stopped 30 shots for visiting Minnesota.
Panthers 2, Stars 1 -- Olli Jokinen scored in overtime as host Florida defeated Dallas and tied the Bruins for 12th in the East.
Avalanche 6, Blackhawks 1 -- Brad Richardson had a goal and an assist for visiting Colorado.
Kings 4, Ducks 3 -- Michael Cammalleri's overtime goal lifted host Los Angeles over Anaheim.
