Real reigns in Spain

Real Madrid clinched its first major trophy since David Beckham came aboard in 2003, but the Los Angeles Galaxy-bound pop icon was reduced to the role of cheerleader for his team's second-half rally yesterday.

Jose Antonio Reyes, who came on for Beckham, equalized a minute after entering the game in the second half and scored an insurance goal with seven minutes to play as Madrid won Spain's Primera Liga title for the 30th time after a 3-1 victory over visiting Mallorca.

Real topped the final standings because of a better head-to-head record against archrivals Barcelona, which won, 5-1, at Gimnastic Tarragona. Madrid and Barcelona finished with 76 points.

Beckham, who rejuvenated his career this spring and sparked Real with crucial assists, left in the 66th minute after appearing to reaggravate a left ankle sprain. He later ran onto the field with his three sons to celebrate.

Gold Cup
Jared Borgetti headed in a goal from 5 yards out in the eighth minute of overtime to give Mexico a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica in a CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal in Houston.

In a semifinal Thursday in Chicago, Mexico will play Guadeloupe, which beat Honduras, 2-1, in the second game.

Borgetti, who leads Mexico with 43 international goals, took a crossing pass from Adolfo Bautista to score the winner.

Forty-two-year-old former French national team midfielder Jocelyn Angloma scored one of two first-half goals for Guadeloupe.

MLS
Maurice Edu scored his second goal of the season and host Toronto FC rolled to a 4-0 victory over FC Dallas in front of franchise-record crowd of 20,156 fans at BMO Field. Danny Dichio (who left at halftime with an apparent ankle injury), Carl Robinson, and Jeff Cunningham also scored for Toronto . . . In a game between teams tied for the fewest points in the league, Cobi Jones's second-half goal was decisive as the Galaxy beat winless Real Salt Lake, 3-2, in Carson, Calif.
