Chivas USA keeps Revolution at bay

So much for the edge the Revolution offense was expected to have last night.

Jesse Marsch and Maykel Galindo scored second-half goals for Chivas USA, which held on after defender Claudio Suarez was ejected in the 81st minute and defeated the Revolution, 2-0, in Carson, Calif.

Chivas USA, which improved to an MLS-best 5-0-1 at home, was without defender Jonathan Bornstein and keeper Brad Guzan, who are with the US national team at the Copa America in Venezuela, and defender Shavar Thomas, who was suspended. Nonetheless, Chivas limited the Revolution to 10 shots, only two of which required saves from Preston Burpo.

The Revolution, without Taylor Twellman (also with the US team) and holding midfielder Shalrie Joseph (groin strain), started three rookies -- forward Adam Cristman, who was off target with four attempts, and midfielders Wells Thompson and Gary Flood.

Ante Razov set up the first goal. As three defenders converged on Razov, the striker fed a charging Marsch, who fired a shot in off the left post from just inside the penalty area in the 60th minute.

After Suarez was sent off for elbowing Cristman, Francisco Mendoza moved to left back and Orlando Perez to central defense. With the Revolution pushing forward in search of the tying goal, Galindo eluded Jay Heaps on the left wing, then hooked a shot over Matt Reis and inside the crossbar in the 89th minute for his seventh goal of the season.

Also in MLS, Kei Kamara headed in a cross in the 69th minute as the host Columbus Crew won their third straight game, beating the New York Red Bulls, 1-0, and ending Juan Pablo Angel's goal streak at six games. And in Frisco, Texas, emergency starter Zach Wells made three saves to help the Houston Dynamo tie FC Dallas, 0-0. Pat Onstad, the MLS leader in goals-against average, injured his back in warm-ups.

Under-20 World Cup -- Columbus Crew midfielder Danny Szetela scored on a 16th-minute header and Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Chris Seitz made five saves in the United States' 1-1 draw with South Korea in the opener for both teams in Montreal.

The South Koreans equalized in the 38th minute on a goal by Shin Young Rok.

Copa America -- Host Venezuela won for the first time in 40 years at the Copa America, beating Peru, 2-0, in Maracaibo. Uruguay struggled to beat Bolivia, 1-0, in an earlier Group A match.
