Middlebury wins on penalty kicks, 4-3

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Thanks to No. 0, the Middlebury men's soccer team has national title No. 1.

Tournament MVP Brian Bush made nine saves in regulation and overtime then one in a shootout last night as the Panthers prevailed, 4-3, on penalty kicks after a scoreless tie with Trinity (Texas) in the NCAA Division 3 championship game.

The Tigers (23-0-1) carried the play, outshooting the Panthers, 23-12.

Casey Ftorek tied the shootout at 1-1 with a bullet into the right side-netting for Middlebury (17-2-3), then Bush dived to deny Robert C'debaca. Andrew Germansky gave Middlebury a 2-1 lead, but the Panthers' next shot, by Stephen Hart, was parried away by David Steinberg.

In the fifth round, Ben Stewart hit the crossbar for Trinity, enabling Brandon Jackson to win it for the Panthers.

Bush finished the season with a 623-minute scoreless streak.
