Ray Whitney had a goal and two assists as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Pittsburgh Penguins, 4-2, last night in Raleigh, N.C., to vault back into first place in the Southeast Division.

Erik Cole and Eric Staal scored power-play goals and Ryan Bayda added his first goal for the Hurricanes, who started without three key defensemen, then lost captain and leading scorer Rod Brind'Amour to a left knee injury.

Evgeni Malkin scored for the fifth straight game for Atlantic Division-leading Pittsburgh.

Brind'Amour collided with Pittsburgh's Nathan Smith and Georges Laraque near the boards at the red line just 1 1/2 minutes into the game and did not return.

Lightning 5, Flyers 3 - Martin St. Louis had a goal and two assists as Tampa Bay handed host Philadelphia its fifth straight loss.

Tampa Bay, which started the night in last place in the Eastern Conference, has won four of its last five games.

Islanders 5, Maple Leafs 4 - Ruslan Fedotenko scored two of the Islanders' four power-play goals and New York beat host Toronto for its second straight victory.

Alex Ponikarovsky, Matt Stajan, Mats Sundin, and Darcy Tucker scored for the Leafs, who dropped to 29th overall in the 30-team NHL.

Blackhawks 6, Predators 1 - Jonathan Toews scored a pair of goals and assisted on another to power visiting Chicago. Jason Arnott tallied for Nashville.

Blues 4, Avalanche 1 - Ryan Johnson scored shorthanded and Manny Legace had 39 saves, lifting St. Louis to victory in Denver.

Coyotes 5, Stars 2 - Radim Vrbata scored a shorthanded goal and added two assists to help Phoenix beat visiting Dallas.

Wild 5, Canucks 4 - Mikko Koivu scored the winning goal in a shootout as visiting Minnesota recovered from a pair of rare blown leads in the third period.

Oilers 3, Sharks 2 - Ales Hemsky, Kyle Brodziak, and Fernando Pisani scored to spark Edmonton in San Jose, Calif.
