Caio Canedo Correa, who set scoring records at Nantucket High School, is on the verge of starting a professional soccer career in his native Brazil.
Correa, 17, has joined Sao Paulo FC's junior team on loan from Volta Redonda FC. Correa was on Volta Redonda FC's senior roster but is expected to play on the junior team of Sao Paulo, one of the strongest clubs in South America, according to his agent Eduardo Prada.
"It's a three-month loan, and he can be expected to join Sao Paulo [on a full-time basis] in July," said Prada, contacted by telephone at his Prada Sports & Marketing agency in Sao Paulo yesterday. "He is doing very well with Sao Paulo and both clubs decided to accept the loan [yesterday]."
Sao Paulo agreed to a transfer fee of about $295,000, according to Prada. Carlos Barbosa Junior, a Hyannis businessman who is a major investor in Volta Redonda FC, helped set up the deal. Correa's father, Luis Alberto, played for Volta Redonda before moving to Rio de Janeiro, then to Nantucket.
