Scituate baseball coach Kevin Greer has witnessed four Sailors' no-hitters in his 13 years behind the bench. Blaine O'Brien has thrown two consecutive no-hitters for Scituate in the last 10 days.
Working on a little extra rest after a rainout Tuesday, the 6-foot-7-inch senior standout continued to dominate, striking out 11 in Scituate's 8-0 victory over Norwell yesterday. O'Brien extended his scoreless streak to 33 innings and has struck out 67 in five starts this season (4-1). His only loss came against Hingham, 3-1, but all the runs were unearned.
"He was overpowering today," said Greer. "It was strikeouts, ground balls to the second baseman, and a couple of fly balls."
Against Hull April 21, O'Brien struck out 16 in a 4-0 victory. The Sailors went on to beat Marshfield, 8-7, the next day for their first Brian F. O'Donnell Memorial tournament championship since 2001.
Terrence O'Brien, Blaine's brother, caught Scituate's other two no-hitters during Greer's career. Blaine's oldest brother, Michael, started the O'Brien family tradition with Greer's Sailors nearly a decade ago.
"They've been hanging with me as I've been coaching," said Greer. "I remember [Blaine] being a little kid at the field. It's a baseball family."
