BU women bound for NCAA lacrosse quarterfinals

A pair of Boston University women's lacrosse players picked a good time to produce arguably the best games of their careers.

Winchester's Steph Walker tied career highs with three goals and 4 points, and Sarah Dalton matched a career high with six goals, lifting the Terriers to a 16-8 victory over New Hampshire yesterday in an NCAA Division 1 first-round game at Nickerson Field.

BU (18-2), which is seeded seventh, will visit second-seeded Penn in a quarterfinal Saturday. The Quakers defeated Colgate, 16-7.

Dalton scored consecutive goals to put BU ahead, 10-8, with 17:38 to play. Walker scored the next two goals, giving BU a four-goal advantage with 4:54 left.

Winchester's Molly Collins, a senior cocaptain for BU, controlled five draws, gobbled up three ground balls, and caused four turnovers.

Reading's Michaela Hardy scored and Sudbury's Ashley Milley stopped four shots for UNH (13-6).

NCAA Division 3 - Jen McGowan scored two goals, including the winner, as Hamilton denied Middlebury, 9-7, in a regional final in Clinton, N.Y. Mimi Schatz and Dana Heritage each scored three goals for the Panthers, who were ousted prior to the Final Four for the first time since 1994, an amazing run of 14 years . . . Jen Pritchard's five goals powered defending national champ Franklin & Marshall to a 16-9 victory over Amherst in a regional final in Lancaster, Pa. Maddie Hoeg scored three goals for the Jeffs.

Men's lacrosse

NCAA Division 1 first round - Peter Christman's goal with 1:28 left in the first overtime lifted host Notre Dame to an 8-7 win over Colgate, putting the Irish in the quarterfinals for the fourth time . . . Paul Rabil's four goals powered host Johns Hopkins past Hofstra, 10-4 . . . Garrett Billings, who finished with three goals and two assists, scored the winner with 6:50 to play and host Virginia held on to bounce Maryland-Baltimore County, 10-9 . . . Mike Leveille scored four goals and added two assists as host Syracuse crushed Canisius, 20-3.

Baseball

NESCAC - North Reading's Matt Sullivan went 3 for 4, scored two runs, and drove in one for Trinity, which extended the nation's best-ever Division 3 start to 37-0 and qualified for the national tournament by beating Amherst, 11-8, in Hartford in the conference final. Walpole's Brendan Powers had two home runs for Amherst.

Northeast-10 - Freshman Derek Ingui of Sterling (3 for 5, homer, stolen base, two RBIs) sparked Franklin Pierce to a 6-4 victory over Southern Connecticut in Rindge, N.H. The Ravens, who won the conference tournament for the second straight year, earned a berth in the NCAA Division 2 tournament.

Softball

NCAA Division 3 - Melanie Neece, a freshman from Westfield, hurled a one-hitter and struck out 10 for Rhode Island College, which eked out a 1-0 victory over St. Joseph's (N.Y.) in Providence to win the New England regional championship. Braintree's Kelsey Souza scored the run, coming home on Christie Lotti's single after Souza singled and stole second in the third. The Anchorwomen will face Tyler (Texas) in the championship round this weekend in Salem, Va. Earlier, St. Joseph's eliminated Tufts, 3-1 . . . Donnalyn Cross's two-run single snapped a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh inning, and SUNY Cortland held on to oust Endicott, 3-1, in a regional final in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

NCAA Division 1 - UMass, which wrapped up its 20th Atlantic 10 tournament title and 14th in 15 seasons Saturday with a 3-0 win over Charlotte, will host a regional this weekend in Amherst. UMass will play Princeton and Lehigh will meet Stanford in opening-round games.

Rowing

ECAC Regatta - The Trinity men's varsity eight won the grand final on Lake Quinsigamond with a time of 5:56.35. The Trinity women's varsity eight finished second to Williams in the grand final by .61 seconds, the Ephs winning in 6:46.82.
