Bryant's run toward its first national championship in men's lacrosse came to an abrupt end yesterday in Syracuse, N.Y.

Le Moyne broke a 2-2 halftime tie by scoring nine unanswered goals en route to an 11-2 win in the NCAA Division 2 semifinals. The Dolphins (15-1), the two-time defending national champions, will meet New York Institute of Technology in next Sunday's championship at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.

The loss ended the Bulldogs' best lacrosse season in school history. Bryant, which climbed to No. 2 in the national rankings, finished 14-4. Bryant begins Division 1 play next season.

No. 1 Le Moyne opened a 2-0 lead in the first half before Bryant answered on goals by Brad Burton and Kevin Hoagland, the latter tallying with nine seconds left in the half.

But the second half was all Le Moyne, as the Dolphins scored three goals in a three-minute span to pull ahead for good.

NYIT downed Limestone, 11-8, in the other semifinal.

Men's Division 1 lacrosse: In quarterfinal play in Annapolis, Md., Virginia and Johns Hopkins clinched berths for next weekend's Final Four at Gillette Stadium.

Ben Rubeor's goal with 31 seconds remaining in overtime lifted second-seeded Virginia to an 8-7 victory over No. 8 Maryland (10-6). Rubeor waltzed in from behind the cage and bounced a 5-yard shot past Maryland keeper Jason Carter for his third goal of the game, sending Virginia (14-3) to the semifinals for the 18th time.

In the second game, Paul Rabil and Steven Boyle each scored three goals and defending champion Johns Hopkins (10-5) held Navy to just one score over the final three quarters in a 10-4 win. The Midshipmen finished 10-6.

Women's Division 1 lacrosse: Lauren Morton and Sarah Dalton each scored twice but Penn erased an early deficit and eliminated Boston University, 8-5, in an NCAA quarterfinal in Philadelphia. The loss ended the Terriers' school-record 15-game win streak.

Down at halftime, 4-2, Morton scored her second goal early in the second half to get the seventh-seeded Terriers (18-3) within one, but the second-seeded Quakers responded with four straight goals to put it out of reach. Dalton scored her 70th and 71st goals of the season, breaking the BU mark set by Jenny Hauser in 2006.

Baseball

Division 2: Derek Ingui, Kevin Rivers, and Matt Anderson homered during an eight-run fourth - all after two were out - and Franklin Pierce (42-12) routed Caldwell, 16-4, in the NCAA Northeast Regional in Rindge, N.H.

In the late game, Pat O'Connor and Jeff Vigurs led a balanced attack and Bryant eliminated Dowling, 15-4. The Bulldogs will meet Caldwell in a loser's bracket game today, with the winner advancing to play Franklin Pierce.

Division 3: Collin Henry homered and drove in three runs and Mark Schmidt scattered 11 hits and three walks in going the distance as Southern Maine pounded Wheaton, 9-3, in an NCAA New England Regional game in Harwich.

Softball

Division 3: Jessica Stang pitched Wisconsin-Whitewater to a 4-1 win over Rhode Island College (36-9) in NCAA Tournament play in Salem, Va., eliminating the Anchorwomen.

Tennis

Division 3: Cary Gibson of Williams beat Meghan McCooey of Tufts, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the final of the NCAA women's singles championship in St. Peter, Minn. Gibson will face Siobhan Finicane of Pomona-Pitzer in the final after Finicane ousted Amherst's Grace Baljon, 6-4, 6-0. In doubles, Brittany Berckes and Alicia Menezes of Amherst advanced to the semis.

In men's singles, Middlebury's Filip Marinkovic beat Charlie Cutler of Washington University, 6-4, 6-2, to advance to the final against Kenyon's Michael Greenberg.
