A highly anticipated matchup between two of the top pitchers in the state lived up to its billing last night as Braintree's Liz DiMascio outdueled Erin Wade and defending champion Taunton, 2-0, in the Division 1 South final.

Wade allowed just four hits and struck out 10 but gave up single runs in the first and sixth. Host Taunton finishes at 23-3, while Braintree (23-1) advances to the EMass final against the North champion.

DiMascio struck out the side on 10 pitches in the first inning. Jacqui Saluti lined a double to right-center field to drive in Jackie Gauthier from second in the first for a 1-0 Braintree lead. The only other run came in the sixth on an overthrow by Jess Moitoza.

DiMascio (16-0) made them stand up, allowing only a pair of hits while striking out 10.

"Liz was tremendous tonight," said Braintree coach Tom Grandy. "In games like this, a run or two can be the difference and we're happy to come out on top."

The Wamps also received a boost from catcher Holly Driscoll, who caught three runners stealing, including a rally-killing throw to third in the fifth to nab Taunton's Vickie McCarthy.

"This is a game of inches, and those throws were extremely important," Grandy said.

Grandy said he wanted his hitters to be aggressive.

"It happened to be Jacqui tonight with the big hit, but I don't think any of our hitters were intimidated and they went up there swinging," he said.

Division 3 North - Alex Gustafson went 4 for 4 with two triples, a double, and three runs in Austin Prep's 6-3 win over Shawsheen. The Cougars will play St. Mary's in the final at Martin Field in Lowell tomorrow at noon.

Scott Weismann knew he would be pitching for the Tigers next year. But now he has a decision - Clemson or Detroit?

The Acton-Boxboro ace was selected in the 18th round (553d overall pick) by the Detroit Tigers in the draft. Weismann, who received the call while at a friend's house, said that though he was excited by the news, he still wants to keep his options open.

"I have no clue what's going to happen," he said. "They're going to call me back, but I haven't made a decision yet."

A-B coach Patrick Grucela has no doubt his star pitcher will make the right decision.

"He's got a good head on his shoulders," Grucela said. "He knows he'll get a great education at Clemson while playing baseball, and he's aware of the opportunity with the Tigers. Either environment will be great for him."
