Jose Guillen finished off a terrific stretch in New York in style, hitting a tiebreaking solo home run off the Yankees' Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning to lift the Kansas City Royals to a 3-2 win yesterday.
Guillen went deep on an 0-2 pitch from Rivera (2-2), pumping his right arm as he watched the ball sail over the fence while rounding first base. Rivera turned around and shouted several times after the drive - a rare show of emotion for the longtime closer.
It was Guillen's 11th homer of the season and fourth in the past three games. He went 9 for 16 in the four-game series with four homers and 10 RBIs, and also scored six runs to help the Royals gain a split.
The Yankees loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, and Melky Cabrera hit a trickler up the line. First baseman Mark Teahen quickly scooped the ball and neatly tossed to reliever Joakim Soria covering the bag.
White Sox 7, Twins 5 - Nick Swisher homered from both sides of the plate and Chicago completed a dominant four-game home sweep of Minnesota for its seventh straight victory.
The White Sox outscored the Twins, 40-15, in the series, and increased their AL Central lead to 6 1/2 games over Minnesota.
Indians 8, Tigers 2 - Ryan Garko and Kelly Shoppach both homered early against Dontrelle Willis (0-1), helping Cleveland build an eight-run lead in Detroit to make Cliff Lee (10-1) the AL's first 10-game winner.
Mariners 3, Blue Jays 2 - Miguel Cairo executed a safety squeeze after Toronto's Jason Frasor walked the bases loaded in the top of the 10th, and J.J. Putz escaped a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom half to preserve Seattle's victory.
Pirates 5, Diamondbacks 3 - Host Pittsburgh took advantage of an erratic Randy Johnson (4-3), who limited the Pirates to six singles over 5 2/3 innings but also made a throwing error and walked five, four of whom scored.
Giants 3, Nationals 2 - San Francisco wrapped up a four-game sweep in Washington as Matt Cain (3-4) allowed one run and eight hits over 6 1/3 innings to get his first victory since May 13.![]()
