The good news for Boston College quarterback Chris Crane came earlier in the day, when he was elected cocaptain along with linebacker Mike McLaughlin.

The not-so-good news came during last night's intrasquad scrimmage, when a blitzing defense made every offensive series the Eagles ran an adventure. Crane threw 25 times, completing 14 to the offense and four to the defense, which also came up with eight sacks and outscored the offense, three touchdowns to one.

"If my defense can get points like that, we're going to win a lot of games," said coach Jeff Jagodzinski with a laugh. "It wasn't very good offensively. The defense took advantage of the turnovers. I hope by Kent State [the regular-season opener, Aug. 30] we at least get a first down."

Jagodzinski still has time to fix what's ailing the offense. So does Crane, who spent several minutes talking with offensive coordinator Steve Logan after the scrimmage.

Crane gave credit to the defense, but said things need to improve offensively.

"It's frustrating, but it's comforting to know that our defense will be playing on our side of the ball once the season starts," said Crane. "They're really good and they were blitzing today. I need to make my decisions a little faster, a little more precise. It's things I will take into my memory bank as we get into the season, but it's nothing that can't be worked out."

Say cheese

The Eagles will not practice today, but will instead have their picture day. Practice will resume tomorrow, with the third scrimmage set for Sunday afternoon . . . Jagodzinski continued to tinker with his offensive line, replacing left guard Clif Ramsey with Nick Rossi . . . Kicker Billy Bennett had a solid scrimmage, connecting on field goals of 26 and 38 yards, while Steve Aponavicius made his one attempt, from 29 . . . Defensive tackle B.J. Raji and defensive back Paul Anderson returned interceptions for touchdowns. Defensive end Alex Albright had two sacks. Freshman defensive end Max Holloway had five tackles, and freshman defensive tackle Kaleb Ramsey had four.
