Defensive tackle Ron Brace did not practice yesterday because of a balky back, but was listed by coach Jeff Jagodzinski as probable for tomorrow's Atlantic Coast Conference home opener against Georgia Tech.

"The only injury of note would be Ron Brace," said Jagodzinski, "who has a back issue, which is a reoccurring thing that bothered him before the Kent State game [last Saturday]. I want to be careful. It was just a thing that flared up on him.

"I don't need to win the game on Wednesday or Thursday. I need him for Saturday."

Despite temperatures in the mid-80s, Brace watched practice in a sweat suit.

Jagodzinski also said he saw more consistency in Billy Bennett's kicks, which could mean the Eagles will be more inclined to attempt field goals from beyond 40 yards.

"It will be interesting to see how they perform before a little bit bigger crowd," said Jagodzinski, whose team played before 10,788 in Cleveland in its opener.

"We will find how they do in a little more pressure-type atmosphere. I suspect they will do fine."

Soaking it in

Aware of the forecast for rain tomorrow, Jagodzinski brought out a bucket of water to douse the footballs before using them in drills . . . Sophomore linebackers Brad Jefferson (arm/wrist) and Anthony Barnes (shoulder), and senior offensive lineman A.J. Smith (illness) will not play for Georgia Tech.
