TORONTO -- The Blue Jays were heavy preseason favorites to win the American League East, if not the World Series. A winter of high-profile acquisitions made them the talk of baseball. The rebuilding Red Sox have assumed that role now. They beat the Blue Jays again, 3-1, Thursday night before a crowd of 25,851 that expended far more energy booing their own desultory team than John Farrell. It would seem Farrell made the right call when he bolted Toronto after two seasons to return to the Red Sox as their manager. At 20-8, the Sox have the best record in baseball and lead the last-place Jays by 10½ games. The Sox have taken four of six games against Toronto, all on the road. They have outscored the Jays by 19 runs. ( 05/03/2013 6:16 AM )

Stephen Drew had 17 plate appearances in spring training before he suffered a concussion March 7 that eventually landed him on the disabled list to start the season. He reported to Double A Portland April 5 and picked up an additional 16 plate appearances over four games. Under major league rules, players on the seven-day concussion disabled list can spend no more than five games in the minor leagues on a rehabilitation assignment. So when Drew was activated April 10, he suspected it would take some time to get his timing down. "It was like spring training was split up," Drew said Thursday before the Red Sox faced the Toronto Blue Jays. "I didn't know when the concussion thing was going to end. It's no excuse, I had to get out there and play." ( 05/03/2013 6:16 AM )

Yes, it does look strange when Clay Buchholz pours water over his head and walks out to the mound with dripping hair. And when he reaches to touch his locks, it does look suspicious. But is he cheating? And if he was, would he be that brazen about it? The answer is probably no, he's not cheating. What he is is 6-0 with a 1.01 ERA, and now people are looking at everything. The allegation was made by Toronto television analyst Dirk Hayhurst, a former major league pitcher who told radio station Sportsnet 590 The Fan that Buchholz was "absolutely" cheating during his start Wednesday night against the Blue Jays. The station's website provided screenshots of Buchholz wiping two fingers on his right hand across his left forearm, which appeared to be partially covered with a white substance. The decision to turn to Celtics radio voice Sean Grande as an occasional fill-in for Dave O'Brien was a particularly logical and inspired choice by WEEI. But unless you happened to hear Grande's tape-delayed broadcasts of Boston University baseball games in the early 1990s -- which consisted of lines such as "Light snow is falling here at the top of the sixth,'' he jokes -- he's probably an unfamiliar voice on the sport. But he says it was a passion long before basketball. "As a kid, going up into college, I couldn't choose between baseball, hockey, and football. I couldn't choose between the three. It's so funny to me that I've grown into this guy that's seen as a basketball guy. But that's the way it goes."( 05/03/2013 12:00 AM )

They can practically pencil each other in for a meeting at the on-deck circle every other night. Sean Coyle, the Salem Red Sox' leadoff hitter with the .313 batting average and eye-popping seven home runs through 14 games, will be trotting in after another deep ball. Garin Cecchini, the No. 3 hitter with the Carolina League-best .398 batting average (as well as 16 extra-base hits and 10 stolen bases) shakes his head. Cecchini is struck by how far the homers travel. "Every one of his home runs were crushed," Cecchini said. "Every time he hits a home run, it's in a clutch situation and I'm going on to the on-deck circle and I'm congratulating him."( 05/03/2013 12:00 AM )

TORONTO -- The Red Sox have set an informal deadline of Thursday to decide whether right fielder Shane Victorino will go on the disabled list with a strained lower back. Based on his improvement the last two days, that seems less likely. Victorino took batting practice in the Rogers Centre cage for the second consecutive day on Wednesday. He is now hopeful of returning to the lineup in Texas on Friday. The final test would be taking batting practice on the field on Thursday. If Victorino feels good then, he will likely avoid the disabled list. "I've progressed every day," Victorino said. "Tomorrow we're going to add to the workload. My goal is if everything goes accordingly, I'd like to play the first game in Texas. That's obviously how my body reacts and how my body feels. " ( 05/02/2013 8:07 AM )

TORONTO (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox were pounding the ball all over the place Wednesday night. Clay Buchholz appreciated the support, but he sure didn't need it. ( 05/02/2013 8:04 AM )

TORONTO -- Clay Buchholz pitched brilliantly again for the Red Sox on Wednesday night, throwing seven shutout innings against the Toronto Blue Jays in a 10-1 victory. Buchholz is now 6-0 with a 1.01 earned run average. It's the best start for a Red Sox pitcher since Roger Clemens had an 0.73 ERA after six starts in 1991. All Clemens did that season was win the Cy Young Award. Buchholz stood in front of his locker after the game and answered questions from a group of reporters about his performance. As the session broke up, Buchholz laughed. "You know what's really good about this year?" he asked. "Not having to pitch to Mike Napoli any more." On a night when Buchholz was dominant, Napoli's two mammoth home runs were the talk of the clubhouse. ( 05/02/2013 7:55 AM )

Since 2003, the Red Sox have made tens of millions of dollars selling food and drink on Yawkey Way, and tickets above Lansdowne Street, but have paid the Boston Redevelopment Authority a fraction of the income earned on the two streets. Now, with a lease agreement set to expire at the end of this season, the club is pushing for permanent rights to conduct business on the streets on the same favorable terms it has enjoyed for the last 11 years. The redevelopment authority, which said in the wake of a Globe report about the deal two years ago that it would demand a higher fee going forward, has dropped that public stance. Both the BRA and the Red Sox declined to comment on negotiations.( 05/02/2013 12:00 AM )
