  • Quantity of Ryan Dempster's pitches outnumbers quality in 12-4 loss to Indians

Ryan Dempster managed to navigate his way through the start of the first inning to the end of the frame in an economical fashion, needing only 15 pitches to get past the first four batters he faced in the game. But in the next two innings, Dempster's pitch count resembled the tote board of a pinball machine run amok, as he needed 30 pitches to get out of the second and 40 to weather a three-run outburst in the third. It resulted in the premature end of Dempster's night in Thursday's humbling 12-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians in the opener of this four-game series against the Tribe before 35,254 at Fenway Park. His total for the night: 85 pitches, 52 strikes (   05/24/2013 5:39 AM )

  • Cleveland Indians rout Red Sox, 12-3, in Terry Francona's return to Fenway Park

No one wanted to make the moment larger than the game itself. It had been two years since a bitter divorce cast a unnecessary pall over the eight years Terry Francona spent with the Red Sox and the two World Series titles he helped bring to the city. Since then it seemed like he had lived several lifetimes, one as a television analyst, another as an author, before recharging and ultimately reentering baseball as manager of the Cleveland Indians. He had returned to Fenway Park last spring under the bright spotlight of the ballpark's 100th anniversary. He had faced his former team already, but that was in Cleveland. He was coming back to Boston a visitor and a rival but still a figurehead of one of the most memorable periods of Red Sox history. It was inevitable that he would be embraced. • Red Sox still weighing whether to place Shane Victorino on the disabled list

Although his stiff left hamstring continues to improve, outfielder Shane Victorino sat out Thursday night's series opener against the Indians and remains day to day, according to manager John Farrell. Victorino has been out since leaving Monday's 6-4 win over the White Sox. Lower-back stiffness forced Victorino to sit seven games at the end of April. After he crashed into the right-field fence at Fenway May 12 against the Blue Jays, he had his ribs examined at Massachusetts General Hospital but didn't miss a game. He did miss two games, however, after colliding with the right-field wall in Tampa May 16. With this latest ding, Farrell said he's still weighing whether to place Victorino on the disabled list.(   05/24/2013 1:14 AM )

  • Terry Francona returning to Fenway in another uniform

CHICAGO -- Terry Francona hasn't managed against the Red Sox at Fenway Park since July 17, 1999, when he was with the Phillies. He returns to the third base dugout Thursday when his Cleveland Indians arrive for a four-game series. Francona managed the Red Sox from 2004-11, winning two World Series and advancing to the postseason three other times. The Sox averaged 93 victories a season during his tenure. "I think it will be a special day when the series kicks off tomorrow," said Red Sox manager John Farrell, Francona's pitching coach from 2007-10. "I would fully expect he'd get a great welcome and a great ovation, and deservedly so. That was eight incredible years that he spent [in Boston]. Looking forward to playing against him." • Don't be quick to lose Jacoby Ellsbury

CHICAGO - The Red Sox' hitting coaches feel Jacoby Ellsbury is about to break out. They see the progress in the leadoff hitter's swing in batting practice and feel it's just a matter of time. "He hasn't yet taken what he does in batting practice to the game,'' said assistant hitting coach Victor Rodriguez. "It's about him being more aggressive earlier in the count. He's getting there. The power is there. The strength is there. I think it's only a matter of time before we see the Ellsbury we know and love.'' Which is why the Red Sox should not let him go off into free agency without fighting to keep him.(   05/23/2013 12:00 AM )
