Jones arrested in Georgia for battery
Former All-Star center fielder Andruw Jones was free on bond after being arrested in suburban Atlanta early Tuesday on a battery charge. Around 1:30 a.m., police responded to a call for a domestic dispute between Jones and his wife in Duluth, Ga. Jones was booked into the Gwinnett County Detention Center around 3:45 a.m. and was released on $2,400 bond by 11 a.m. Once one of the premier players in the big leagues, Jones broke into the majors with the Braves in 1996 and won 10 consecutive Gold Gloves from 1998-2007. He has 434 career home runs in 17 major league seasons. Jones earlier this month signed a $3.5 million, one-year contract with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of Japan’s Pacific League. He played a reserve role for the Yankees last season . . . Former Red Sox closer Ugueth Urbina was released from a Venezuelan prison after serving more than five years on an attempted-murder conviction. Urbina was accused of attacking multiple men on his property in November 2005, allegedly trying to set them on fire, and going after at least one with a machete. He was convicted in March 2007 and given a 14-year sentence. The incident ended an 11-year career in which Urbina, 38, twice made the All-Star team. In 2002, Urbina had 40 saves pitching for Boston.
Syracuse suspends two for bowl game
Syracuse suspended sophomore tailback Adonis Ameen-Moore and reserve tight end Max Beaulieu for the Pinstripe Bowl on Saturday for violating athletic department rules. Coach Doug Marrone announced the suspensions in an email that did not elaborate on what the players had done. Ameen-Moore, who is used mainly in the Orange’s short-yardage formation, gained 108 yards on 30 carries and scored six touchdowns in the six games he played. Beaulieu played in just one game this season, a home win over UConn. Days earlier, starting outside linebacker Marquis Spruill was also disciplined. He will not play ‘‘a significant portion’’ of the Pinstripe Bowl against West Virginia. Spruill and injured running back Steve Rene were arrested Dec. 2 and charged with misdemeanors after scuffling with Syracuse Police . . . Auburn hired longtime Southeastern Conference assistant Melvin Smith as cornerbacks coach. Smith has spent the past seven seasons coaching the secondary at Mississippi State, and has coached with an SEC school for 18 of his 31 years. Auburn also signed the top-ranked junior college guard in Devonte Danzey, its second junior college transfer since Gus Malzahn’s hiring as head coach. The Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College offensive lineman has three more years of eligibility.
Nadal (virus) pulls out of exhibition
Rafael Nadal’s return to competition will be delayed by a stomach virus. The Spaniard was scheduled to play in an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi Thursday after missing seven months because of tendinitis in his left knee. But he said on his Facebook page that his doctors ordered him to pull out when he was running a fever, telling him his body needed rest. ‘‘My rehab has gone well, my knee feels good and I was looking forward to competing,’’ he said. The 11-time Grand Slam champion hasn’t played since June, when he lost to 100th-ranked Lukas Rosol in the second round at Wimbledon. Top-ranked Novak Djokovic and No. 3 Andy Murray are also scheduled to play at Abu Dhabi.
Cavs’ Varejao to miss fourth straight
Cavaliers center Anderson Varejao will miss his fourth straight game Wednesday because of a bruised right knee he suffered last week against Toronto. The Cavs said Varejao won’t travel with them to Washington for a game against the Wizards. Varejao, who leads the NBA in rebounding with 14.4 per game, wasn’t with the Cavs Saturday when they snapped a six-game losing streak with a win in Milwaukee. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers claimed guard Shaun Livingston on waivers from Washington and waived guard Donald Sloan . . . Former Juventus and Italy striker Alessandro Del Piero suggested that his contract situation with Sydney FC could be resolved soon and that he’s not overly concerned by the issue. There was talk he would leave the A-League club at the end of the season.
