Valdespin, a utility player, appeared in 66 games for the Mets this season, hitting .188 with four home runs and 16 RBIs. He last started a game for New York on June 25, and sevred mostly as a defensive replacement and pinch-hitter for the Mets for the month of July.
Valdespin was a controversial player for the Mets this season, as he cursed out Mets’ manager Terry Collins earlier this year, and is currently serving a three-game suspension in the minors for inciting a benches-clearing brawl after showboating following a home run. He hasn’t played in the majors since July 17.
