Umpire Wally Bell, who worked the National League Division Series between the Pirates and Cardinals this month, died. He was 48. The commissioner’s office confirmed Bell’s death Monday. He died of an apparent heart attack in his home state of Ohio. A veteran of 21 big league seasons, Bell underwent open heart surgery before the start of spring training in 1999 but returned to the field early in the regular season.

In other news, Athletics rookie righthander Sonny Gray will have surgery on his left thumb to repair a torn ligament.

And: The Carolina Hurricanes have placed backup goalie and former Bruin Anton Khudobin on injured reserve with an unspecified lower-body injury.
