Gary Sheffield lined an RBI double with two outs in the 10th inning, enabling the Yankees to end the Anaheim Angels' nine-game winning streak with an 8-7 victory last night in New York.
The game included two rain delays totaling nearly 2 1/2 hours, plus a bizarre break when the Yankees' radio broadcast began echoing from the scoreboard in the 10th.
About 3,000 fans from the announced crowd of 36,706 were still in the stands for the final out, at 1:23 a.m. Yankees management rewarded them, offering to redeem their ticket stubs for one of three games in September.
Alex Rodriguez singled with one out in the 10th off Ben Weber (0-1). An out later, Sheffield hit a drive over leaping left fielder Jeff DaVanon. When the ball ricocheted off the wall and past DaVanon, Rodriguez had enough time score from first.
Bengie Molina's two-run homer put the Angels ahead, 7-6, in the ninth, stopping Mariano Rivera's streak of 12 straight saves this year and 27 overall. But Anaheim's Troy Percival couldn't hold the lead. Jorge Posada singled with one out, pinch runner Homer Bush stole second, Hideki Matsui walked and Ruben Sierra hit a tying single.
Royals 5, Blue Jays 1 -- Juan Gonzalez hit a tiebreaking single off AL Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay in the sixth, helping host Kansas City halt Toronto's six-game winning streak. Mike Sweeney added a two-run double during a three-run seventh inning for the Royals, who had lost seven straight home games against Toronto since July 29, 2002.
