San Francisco Chronicle reporters Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams, who wrote a book about Barry Bonds's alleged steroid use, were subpoenaed yesterday to testify before a federal grand jury regarding court documents they used in their articles, the newspaper reported. The subpoenas called for the authors to turn over their copies of grand jury transcripts from the 2003 investigation of a steroid distribution ring based at the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, according to the Chronicle. They also were asked to provide the identity of the person or persons who leaked the secret documents to them. Eve Burton, vice president and general counsel for Hearst Corp., which owns the newspaper, said, ''The Chronicle and its reporters intend to fight the subpoenas vigorously." . . . Washington Nationals shortstop Cristian Guzman will miss the entire season after the team decided his right shoulder needs surgery. Guzman has been out since early in spring training. The team put him on the disabled list March 27 and kept him in Florida for extended spring training, hoping he could build up the muscle around a tear in the shoulder and avoid surgery. Guzman is expected to be ready for spring training in 2007 . . . Oakland Athletics catcher Jason Kendall was suspended four games for charging the mound Tuesday, and Los Angeles Angels pitcher John Lackey was fined for his actions in the altercation. Kendall, who appealed the suspension and was in the lineup against Tampa Bay, was also fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball . . . Charlie Zink tossed five shutout innings to help the visiting Pawtucket Red Sox complete a 2-1 win over Syracuse in a game suspended in the third inning Thursday because of rain. In the second game, David Purcey pitched six strong innings for Syracuse in the SkyChiefs' 4-1 win . . . Brandon Moss had three hits and scored three runs to lead the visiting Portland Sea Dogs to a 7-2 win over the New Britain Rock Cats.

Nuggets part ways with Vandeweghe
Kiki Vandeweghe won't be the one fixing the Denver Nuggets this summer. Team owner
Stan Kroenke said he's not going to extend his general manager's contract. Vandeweghe revamped the roster and led the Nuggets back to respectability after taking over in 2001, but speculation about his future ran rampant all season. The Nuggets were expected to jump into the elite echelon of the Western Conference this season but injuries and inconsistencies did them in. Although they won their first divisional title in 18 seasons, they were bounced from the playoffs in five games by the Los Angeles Clippers . . . Oklahoma State men's basketball coach
