PITTSBURGH --Florida Marlins starter Sergio Mitre threw only three pitches before leaving Friday night's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates with right shoulder discomfort.

With the count 2-and-1 on Pirates leadoff hitter Jose Bautista, Mitre was examined on the mound by the training staff and left the game. He was replaced by left-hander Jason Vargas.

Mitre had a start pushed back two days because of an injured right big toe late last month.

Since that start against the Colorado Rockies was moved to April 30, Mitre is 0-2 and has allowed nine earned runs in 11 1-3 innings.

The Marlins scored five runs in the top of the first.
