Alex Cintron delivered again, hitting a tiebreaking run-scoring single in the seventh inning last night to lift the host Chicago White Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Cintron hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning Tuesday night to give the White Sox a 4-3 win in the opener of the three-game series. And now after back-to-back wins by identical scores, Chicago has moved within a half-game of the Tigers in the AL Central.
Jose Contreras (6-0) won his 14th straight regular-season decision dating to last season and picked up his first victory since coming off the disabled list May 21.
He pitched seven innings, giving up three runs -- two earned -- and seven hits. Contreras is 14-0 in his last 18 regular-season starts and hasn't lost since Aug. 15 of last season.
Bobby Jenks pitched the ninth for his 17th save in 18 chances.
Mets 9, Dodgers 7 -- Tom Glavine (9-2) became baseball's first nine-game winner despite a shaky 5 1/3-inning performance, Carlos Beltran and David Wright each had three hits, and visiting New York beat Los Angeles.
Rookie Lastings Milledge tripled and homered and drove in three runs for the Mets, who won two of three in the series and are 13-5 with two ties in their 20 series this season.
Reds 7, Cardinals 4 -- Rich Aurilia matched career highs with four hits and five RBIs, pulling Cincinnati into a tie with host St. Louis for first place in the NL Central.
Scott Hatteberg had two hits, two walks, and two RBIs to help the Reds stretch their winning streak to a season-best seven games.
Blue Jays 5, Orioles 3 -- Toronto's Casey Janssen (5-3) gave up one run in six innings to earn his fourth straight win and Vernon Wells had four hits at Baltimore.
The Blue Jays scored two runs off Kris Benson (6-5) with the aid of wild pitches, then added two unearned runs in the seventh against Todd Williams before Wells doubled in a ninth-inning run.
Angels 6, Devil Rays 2 -- Mike Napoli and Kendry Morales homered and rookie Jered Weaver remained unbeaten in three major league starts as Los Angeles won at Tampa Bay.
Rockies 16, Pirates 9 -- Yorvit Torrealba hit a grand slam and had one of host Colorado's major league record-tying five sacrifice flies. The five sacrifice flies tied the record for a nine-inning game set by the Seattle Mariners against Oakland Aug. 7, 1988.
Phillies 7, Diamondbacks 3 -- Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, and Sal Fasano homered and the Phillies completed a three-game sweep at Phoenix.
Ryan Madson (6-3) went a season-long 7 2/3 innings for his third victory in four starts. He allowed three runs and eight hits.
Marlins 8, Giants 1 -- Dontrelle Willis pitched a six-hitter and Dan Uggla homered twice to boost Florida past host San Francisco. Willis (3-6), back home in the Bay Area, struck out three and walked three to win his second straight start following a six-game losing streak.
Indians 11, Athletics 2 -- Paul Byrd (5-4) won for the first time in more than a month, Victor Martinez had four RBIs, and Aaron Boone hit a three-run homer, lifting host Cleveland to a rout of Oakland.
Rangers 4, Royals 2 -- Gary Matthews's two-run double capped a four-run ninth inning and lifted Texas over host Kansas City, which dropped to a major-league worst 14-43.
Nationals 5, Braves 2 -- Marlon Anderson hit a two-run homer and Ramon Ortiz (6-3) won his fifth straight start to lift Washington at Atlanta.
Padres 6, Brewers 5 -- Adrian Gonzalez and Vinny Castilla hit back-to-back homers in the eighth inning to lift visiting San Diego to the victory.
