Kazmir could be headed to disabled list

Scott Kazmir's scheduled start was pushed back again yesterday, and Tampa Bay's All-Star pitcher could be placed on the disabled list because of a sore left shoulder. Kazmir was originally slated to start Friday at Yankee Stadium, but was bumped back to Tuesday at home against Detroit. Now, he'll miss that scheduled outing, and the Devil Rays are discussing whether to put him on the DL. If Kazmir goes on the DL, the move would be retroactive to July 24 . . . Chipper Jones is likely headed for the DL with a strained left oblique muscle. The Braves called up infielder Tony Pena from Triple A Richmond after trading infielder Wilson Betemit to the Dodgers for pitcher Danys Baez and infielder Willy Aybar . . . David Murphy hit a three-run homer and Jeff Bailey added a solo shot to lift the host Pawtucket Red Sox to a 5-4 win over the Buffalo Bisons.

Knicks sign Jeffries to offer sheet
The New York Knicks signed Washington forward Jared Jeffries to an offer sheet believed to be for about $30 million over five years, according to reports in the New York Times and New York Post. The Wizards will have seven days to match the offer and keep the former Indiana star . . . In the WNBA, Alana Beard scored 21 points and DeLisha Milton-Jones added 19 as the Washington Mystics beat the host Indiana Fever, 74-67 . . . In Charlotte, N.C., Erin Thorn scored a career-high 24 points to lead the New York Liberty to an 85-80 victory over the Sting.

Clijsters reaches Bank of the West final
Top-seeded Kim Clijsters overcame her inconsistencies to beat Nicole Vaidisova, 7-5, 6-2, in Stanford, Calif., to reach her fifth straight championship match at the Bank of the West Classic. She will face will face second-seeded Patty Schnyder, a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 winner over unseeded Tatiana Golovin . . . Novak Djokovic upset four-time champion Carlos Moya, 6-1, 7-5, to advance to the final of the Croatia Open in Umag. Djokovic will face unseeded Stanislas Wawrinka, who beat eighth-seeded Filippo Volandri, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 . . . Anna Smashnova beat Martina Muller, 6-4, 6-3, in the semifinals of the Budapest Grand Prix. The eighth-seeded Smashnova will face fifth-seeded Lourdes Dominguez Lino, who beat second-seeded Michaella Krajicek, 6-3, 6-4.

Arkansas' McFadden hurt in bar fight
Arkansas running back Darren McFadden -- the 2005 SEC freshman of the year -- underwent surgery on his toe following an overnight bar fight and is doubtful for the Razorbacks' season opener against Southern California Sept. 2 in Fayetteville. According to a police report, McFadden was involved in a disturbance at 4:20 a.m. yesterday at Palace the Club, a private club in Little Rock. Arkansas said in a release that McFadden will miss several weeks . . . Slippery Rock University will reinstate women's swimming and water polo this upcoming season following a federal judge's ruling that eliminating the sports did not comply with a federal law requiring equal opportunities for female athletes.

Jones wins unanimous decision, title
A playful, far-fresher Roy Jones Jr. frustrated tired champion Prince Badi Ajamu to win the North American Boxing Organization light heavyweight title in Boise, Idaho. All three judges scored the fight 119-106 for Jones . . . Guyana-born Australian Gairy St. Clair won the International Boxing Federation and International Boxing Organization super-featherweight titles, unanimously outpointing South Africa's Cassius Baloyi in Johannesburg . . . Virgil Hill says he has negotiated a deal to fight Henry Maske in Germany, probably in January . . . Hungary's Zsolt Erdei retained his WBO light heavyweight title, outpointing Germany's Thomas Ulrich in a one-sided decision in Oberhausen, Germany.

Iraqi coach resigns after death threats
Iraq's national soccer coach resigned after receiving death threats against him and his family. Akram Ahmed Salman submitted his resignation to Ahmed Abbas, the secretary general of the Iraqi Football Federation, and left the capital. Abbas said that Salman was told, ``We know you, your family members and your address. Quit training the Iraqi soccer team otherwise you'll all be eliminated." It wasn't clear if the threat was by telephone, or a written statement . . . Former Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira signed a four-year deal to lead 2010 World Cup host South Africa. The 63-year-old Parreira, who already has coached at five World Cup tournaments, will become South Africa's 14th coach since the country returned to international competition 14 years ago . . . The New England Riptide rallied in the seventh inning to take a 5-4 victory over the Connecticut Brakettes in the third game of the four-game National Pro Fastpitch series in Lowell.
