Tampa Bay, Dodgers win in arbitration

Baseball
Baseball owners are 2-0 in their first arbitration hearings of the year. The Los Angeles Dodgers won their case against reliever Joe Beimel yesterday, setting his salary at $912,500 this year. Beimel asked for a raise from $425,000 to $1.25 million at Friday's hearing, but the arbitrators decided on the club's offer . . . The Tampa Bay Devil Rays won their case against backup catcher Josh Paul, who sought a raise from $475,000 to $940,000. The Devil Rays offered $625,000.

Colleges

Gonzaga players arrested, suspended
Gonzaga basketball players Josh Heytvelt and Theo Davis were suspended from the team following an arrest in which police said marijuana and psychedelic mushrooms were in their car. The players were booked into the Spokane (Wash.) County Jail for investigation of drug possession, police said. They were released on their own recognizance. Police said the amount of marijuana was enough only for a misdemeanor, but possession of mushrooms is a felony . . . Duke named former North Carolina assistant Danny Pearman to its football staff. He came to Chapel Hill before the 2006 season to coach defensive ends but wasn't retained by new Tar Heels coach Butch Davis.

Williams sisters pull out of tourneys
Serena Williams has the flu and Venus Williams has a sore wrist, forcing the sisters to pull out of upcoming tournaments. Serena withdrew from the Bangalore Open in India in what would have been her first tournament since her surprising victory at the Australian Open. Venus will not play at next week's Diamond Games in Antwerp, Belgium, because of a lingering injury to her left wrist, organizers said . . . Lucie Safarova upset top-seeded Justine Henin, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, to reach the final of the Open Gaz de France in Paris. She will face Nadia Petrova, a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) winner over Amelie Mauresmo.

Figure skating

Meissner takes Four Continents title
Kimmie Meissner won the Four Continents women's title in Colorado Springs, rallying from sixth place in the free skate. Upset with her performance in the short program Thursday night, Meissner made up more than 4 points on Joannie Rochette of Canada, who ended up third. Emily Hughes was second after a personal-best international performance in the free skate. Canadian pairs skater Jessica Dube was back at the rink after having surgery Thursday night to repair lacerations to her left cheek and nose after being hit by partner Bryce Davison's skate in the free skate competition that day. Annie Barabe, who coaches the pair, said Dube is ready to get back on the ice. Doctors want her to wait at least 10 days.

Winter sports

Jacobsen jumps ahead in World Cup
Norway's Anders Jacobsen increased his lead in the season standings by winning a ski jumping World Cup event in thick fog in Willingen, Germany. Jacobsen leaped 148.0 meters on his first jump, then followed with 139.0 to finish with 283.1 points for his fourth season win. Germany's Michael Uhrmann was second at 276.2 . . . American Steven Holcomb tied Ivo Rueegg of Switzerland for first place in a two-man bobsled World Cup race in Cesana, Italy. Holcomb and Curtis Tomasevicz finished in a combined time of 1:53.43, matching the time of Rueegg and brakeman Cedric Grand. In the women's event, Germany's Sandra Kiriasis and brakeman Anja Schneiderheinze-Stoeckel won in a combined time of 1:56.01 -- 0.30 seconds ahead of Americans Shauna Rohbock and Valerie Fleming.

Sabres' Gaustad out for the season
Sabres left wing Paul Gaustad will miss the rest of the season because of a sliced tendon in his left leg that will require surgery. He was cut on the lower part of his leg when he collided with Ottawa's Dany Heatley Wednesday . . . Douglas Orr, 83, father of legendary Bruins defenseman Bobby Orr, has died in Parry Sound Ontario, the Edmonton Sun reported . . . Washington Wizards Etan Thomas's and Brendan Haywood's feud escalated with another exchange of blows, leading to a two-game suspension for Thomas for throwing a punch at Haywood at practice Friday . . . Russia's Yelena Isinbayeva broke her own indoor mark (16 feet 1 1/4 inches) in the women's pole vault in Donetsk, Ukraine, clearing 16-2 . . . Former Oakland Raiders quarterback Kenny Stabler will sell his Ono Island house on the Alabama coast to pay tax debts exceeding $500,000 . . . The Sacramento Kings will be without center Brad Miller until after the All-Star break after pain from a partially torn fascia in his left foot flared up.
