Yankees' Mussina, Pavano land on DL

Mike Mussina and Carl Pavano joined fellow Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang on the disabled list yesterday, further depleting New York's taxed pitching staff. Pavano was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday with tightness in his forearm, while Mussina has a strained hamstring he injured three batters into the third inning Wednesday in a 5-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins. Mussina tried to throw off the mound yesterday morning but stopped after only seven pitches. Pavano didn't throw his scheduled bullpen session. Righthander Chris Britton was recalled from Triple A Scranton to fill one roster spot and Newsday reported Chase Wright will be called up from Double A Trenton to start tomorrow night against the Indians . . . Los Angeles Angels righthander Bartolo Colon, working his way back from a torn rotator cuff that sidelined him for the final two months last season, pitched seven shutout innings for Triple A Salt Lake against Las Vegas in a final rehab tuneup . . . The Toronto Blue Jays placed closer B.J. Ryan on the 15-day DL with a sprained elbow, a day after he blew his second save in his last four chances. Setup man Jason Frasor will take over in the closer's role . . . The Colorado Rockies placed infielder Kaz Matsui on the 15-day DL because of back spasms. He had started the first 11 games of the season at second base and was hitting .361. The Rockies called up infielder Clint Barmes from Triple A Colorado Springs to take Matsui's roster spot . . . Yesterday's game between the Pawtucket Red Sox and the Scranton Yankees was rained out. The teams will play a doubleheader today at McCoy Stadium beginning at 12:05, weather permitting . . . The Portland Sea Dogs' road matchup with the Binghamton Mets also was washed out. No makeup date has been set.

Chiefs' Shields announces retirement
Pro Bowl guard Will Shields is retiring after 14 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 35-year-old announced his decision on his website, www.willtosucceed.org. Shields, who played in a franchise-record 224 games, made his 12th Pro Bowl appearance last season to tie the record held by Minnesota guard Randall McDaniel. However, Chiefs spokesman Bob Moore said no one in the administration was aware of Shields's decision. "We haven't spoken with Will regarding his future plans," Moore said. "I'm sure in due time we will speak if that's the path he takes."

Karlovic aces his way to clay court title
Unseeded Ivo Karlovic used his booming serve to stop qualifier Mariano Zabaleta, 6-4, 6-1, to win the US Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston and capture his first ATP Tour title. The 6-foot-10-inch Karlovic broke Zabaleta in the second game of the final set and again three games later to go up, 5-1. He closed out the win on the second match point with an ace. His fastest serve of the day was clocked at 149 miles per hour . . . Steffi Graf required three stitches to her lip after husband Andre Agassi inadvertently hit her in the face with his racket during a fund-raiser that followed the Houston final. Graf and Agassi were holding hands -- her left to his right -- while rallying with a couple of youngsters when Agassi's follow-through struck his wife in the face . . . Jelena Jankovic won the biggest match of her career, battling a swirling wind to defeat Dinara Safina, 6-2, 6-2, in the championship of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C. It was the first Tier 1 final and victory for Jankovic, who was seeded second and will improve to No. 7 in the rankings . . . Nicolas Almagro won his second straight Valencia Open title by beating Potito Starace, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, in Spain. The 21-year-old broke Starace four times over the final two sets for his second career ATP title . . . Marat Safin overcame a shaky start to beat 15th-seeded Jarkko Nieminen, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco . . . The Boston Lobsters of World TeamTennis finalized their roster, drafting Julie Ditty and Nikita Kryvonos to join returning players Nicole Pratt and Amir Hadad. The Lobsters' season begins July 5.

Red Bulls' Mathis enjoys happy return
Clint Mathis had a goal and an assist in his return to New York, leading the Red Bulls to a 3-0 victory over FC Dallas in a match played in a heavy, windswept rain in East Rutherford, N.J. Mathis, the second-leading scorer in franchise history, assisted on the game's first goal in the 18th minute when his corner kick was redirected by Jozy Altidores past goalie Shaka Hislop. Altidores fed Mathis in the 34th minute for his first goal since he was reacquired from Colorado in a trade two weeks ago . . . Chad Barrett fired a shot through goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul's legs in the 85th minute to give the Chicago Fire a 1-1 tie at Colorado . . . Michael Ballack put Chelsea into the FA Cup final by scoring in extra time to give his team a 2-1 win over Blackburn at Manchester, England. Chelsea will face Manchester United in the final May 19 . . . Jason Platt scored at 2:47 of overtime, giving the Providence Bruins a 1-0 victory over the visiting Manchester Monarchs in the AHL regular-season finale. Jordan Sigalet made 23 saves for the shutout. Providence will face Hartford Wednesday in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series . . . Stuart O'Grady of Australia won the Paris-Roubaix cycling classic for the first time with a time of 6 hours 9 minutes 7 seconds . . . It could be a lonely outing for people lucky enough to get tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In placing more than 7 million tickets on sale, Beijing organizers also announced a one-ticket policy for the two most popular events of the Games. Though the policy only applies to the opening and closing ceremonies, tickets from other "high-demand sessions" will be limited to two tickets per person . . . Charlotte's Bobby Lutz turned down an offer to become South Alabama's new men's basketball coach and will remain with the 49ers . . . Mubarak Shami of Qatar won the Paris Marathon in 2:07:19.
