Phillips, Reds win it in a flash
Two players who almost cost the Cincinnati Reds a game ended up winning it for them.
Scott Hatteberg hit a two-out, solo homer that tied it in the ninth, and Brandon Phillips singled with the bases loaded in the 10th inning last night, sending the Cincinnati Reds to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies.
Both of them had an error on the same play in the fifth inning, giving the Phillies a 1-0 lead that held until the two Cincinnati infielders got another chance.
"It seemed like we were asleep most of the game," Hatteberg said. "It was good for us to get that miracle. The object of the game is to drive in more than you let in. I let one in, so I owed us one."
One out away from finishing a combined one-hitter, Tom Gordon (0-1) gave up Hatteberg's homer on a 3-1 breaking ball that got too much of the plate, the closer's second blown save.
An inning after he lost the lead, Gordon lost the game, too.
He walked Javier Valentin with one out in the 10th, Ryan Freel followed with a single, and Adam Dunn walked. Phillips then singled to left field to finish it.
Jon Coutlangus (1-0) got the victory with one hitless inning.
Astros 6, Brewers 5 -- Craig Biggio hit his first grand slam in 13 years with one out in the ninth and visiting Houston extended its winning streak to five.
Chris Burke led off the ninth with a bunt single off Matt Wise (0-1). Adam Everett then walked on four pitches.
Brad Ausmus bunted, but catcher Johnny Estrada couldn't throw out Burke at third to load the bases with no outs. Greg Aquino struck out pinch hitter Mike Lamb before Biggio hit his third career grand slam into the Brewers' bullpen in left center field.
Braves 7, Mets 3 -- Tim Hudson was stingy over eight innings and Chipper Jones hit a two-run homer to help Atlanta win at New York.
Kelly Johnson also had two hits for the Braves, who moved into first in the NL East by winning the opener of the weekend series between the top two teams in the division.
Hudson (3-0) allowed five hits and walked two. He has allowed two runs in 29 innings this season for a 0.62 ERA.
Padres 11, Rockies 1 -- Adrian Gonzalez homered and matched his career high with four RBIs and Chris Young continued his mastery of Colorado in a win at Denver
Young (2-1) allowed four hits, all singles, and a run in seven innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out seven.
Cardinals 2, Cubs 1 -- Reliever-turned-starter Braden Looper (3-1) allowed five hits in seven innings and Preston Wilson hit a long, two-run homer in the seventh as St. Louis snapped a four-game losing streak by beating Chicago.
Nationals 6, Marlins 5 -- Chris Snelling singled off first baseman Mike Jacobs's glove to score Ryan Church from second in the 14th inning to pace Washington at Miami.
Jesus Colome (2-0) picked up the win for the Nationals with three scoreless innings.
Royals 11, Twins 7 -- Mark Grudzielanek's home run keyed a five-run fifth inning and carried host Kansas City to a come-from-behind victory over Minnesota.
White Sox 5, Tigers 4 -- Darin Erstad's tiebreaking single in the seventh inning lifted Chicago over host Detroit.
Juan Uribe and Tadahito Iguchi homered for Chicago and helped Nick Masset (1-0) earn his first major league victory. He allowed one hit in 1 1/3 innings.
Orioles 5, Blue Jays 4 -- Nick Markakis singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, capping a rally that carried host Baltimore over Toronto.
Indians 4, Devil Rays 3 -- Travis Hafner hit a two-run homer and drove in the go-ahead run on a ninth-inning single as Cleveland won at St. Petersburg, Fla.
Athletics 16, Rangers 4 -- Rookie Travis Buck hit his first career homer and drove in a career-high five runs to help visiting Oakland stretch its winning streak to four games.![]()
