Rodriguez's 2 HRs not enough
Slugger's record-tying day can't stop NY slide
Two more homers by Alex Rodriguez couldn't pull the New York Yankees out of their tailspin.
Rodriguez tied the major league record for home runs in April, hitting his 13th and 14th in a 10-8 loss to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays last night in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Rocco Baldelli and B.J. Upton offset the Yankees star by combining to drive in seven runs for Tampa.
Baldelli hit a three-run homer off Kei Igawa (1-1) in the second inning. Upton lined a solo shot off the left-field foul pole in the fourth for a 5-3 lead, then added a three-run double off reliever Luis Vizcaino to finish with a career-high four RBIs.
The Yankees, swept during a weekend series in Boston, dropped their fourth straight despite Rodriguez's big night -- 4 for 5, four runs, three RBIs -- which raised his batting average to .400.
Rodriguez's second-inning solo shot off Casey Fossum (2-1) was the 477th of his career and extended his hitting streak to 18 games to start this season and 23 in a row dating to last September. The two-run shot off Al Reyes in the ninth gave him 34 RBIs and tied the mark for homers in April set by Albert Pujols last year. Rodriguez is the first player to hit 14 homers in his team's first 18 games.
Igawa allowed seven runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. New York pitchers have given up six runs or more in five straight games and nine of 18 this year.
Fossum also yielded a solo homer to Robinson Cano in the fifth. The lefthander allowed six runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings and benefited from the Yankees hitting into four double plays.
Athletics 6, Orioles 5 -- Nick Swisher hit two homers, including a drive that sparked a five-run fourth against Erik Bedard, and visiting Oakland ended Baltimore's four-game winning streak.
Bedard (3-2) retired the first nine Oakland batters before giving up five hits and a walk in the fourth. Shannon Stewart led off with a single and Swisher followed with his third homer, a no-doubt shot to left. Mike Piazza hit a one-out single and Bobby Crosby doubled before Mark Ellis hit a run-scoring grounder.
Swisher added a solo shot against Danys Baez in the ninth. It was his seventh career two-homer game, and the third time he homered from both sides of the plate.
Oakland's Dan Haren (2-2) allowed one run, five hits, and a walk over seven innings to lower his ERA to an American League-best 1.41.
Tigers 9, Angels 5 -- Curtis Granderson led off the game with a home run, Ivan Rodriguez had a pair of two-out RBI singles, and Detroit beat Los Angeles at Anaheim, Calif.
White Sox 7, Royals 4 -- Mark Buehrle (2-0) didn't pitch another no-hitter, but he did work seven solid innings, and Paul Konerko hit his first two homers since Opening Day and drove in five runs for visiting Chicago.
Indians 7, Twins 3 -- At Minneapolis, Victor Martinez hit a three-run homer and Ryan Garko drove in the go-ahead run for the second straight game for Cleveland with a bloop single in the 12th.
Mariners 5, Rangers 4 -- Seattle snapped its six-game losing streak as Ichiro Suzuki went 3 for 5 with a three-run triple in Arlington, Texas.
Phillies 11, Astros 4 -- Jimmy Rollins's leadoff homer was a signal of things to come for host Philadelphia, which banged out a season-high 20 hits.
Rollins homered off Chris Sampson (2-1), tripled, singled, and drove in two runs in his first three at-bats. Needing a double in the seventh to complete the cycle, Rollins lined a single off reliever Dave Borkowski and scored on Shane Victorino's two-RBI double that put the Phillies ahead, 9-4, just before Chase Utley tacked on a two-run homer.
Craig Biggio also hit a leadoff homer for Houston, the first time this season leadoff batters went deep in the same game.
Marlins 8, Braves 7 -- Awaiting the imminent birth of his first child, Dontrelle Willis went about his business for host Florida, pitching 6 2/3 innings to become the National League's first four-game winner.
Willis (4-1), whose wife was expected to deliver a daughter last night, gave up eight hits and five runs but still won his fourth consecutive start against Atlanta and improved to 13-2 in April.
The Marlins' Dan Uggla homered and drove in three runs, giving him three homers and nine RBIs in two games. Willis singled in the second, then tripled and scored during Florida's six-run fifth.
Brewers 5, Cubs 4 -- Prince Fielder slugged a solo homer in the eighth, and completed Milwaukee's comeback in Chicago with another in the 12th off Rocky Cherry (0-1), who was making his major league debut.
Mets 6, Rockies 1 -- Jose Valentin had a three-run homer and drove in four, and John Maine (3-0) pitched into the eighth to power New York at home.![]()
