Peralta lifts Indians in 11th
Rangers strike out 19 times in defeat
With the strikeouts piling up, Jhonny Peralta figured he might as well swing away, too.
Peralta hit the first pi tch he saw for a game-winning RBI single with one out in the 11th inning to give the host Cleveland Indians an 8-7 victory last night over the Texas Rangers, who fanned out a team-record 19 times.
"I was going to swing at anything," Peralta said. "I put it in play and it found a hole."
Victor Martinez doubled down the right-field line to open the 11th off Willie Eyre (1-1) and took third on Kelly Shoppach's ground single to center. After Jason Michaels struck out, Peralta, in a 3-for-36 (.091) slump, hit a grounder just out of the reach of diving third baseman Hank Blalock to drive in Martinez for the win.
Fernando Cabrera (1-0), the last of seven Cleveland pitchers, struck out five over two innings for the win.
"Fernando pitched well with the game on the line," said Indians manager Eric Wedge.
"We struck out 19 guys?" he said. "This was not your usual run-of-the-mill ballgame."
The teams combined for 32 K's. Rangers' Blalock and Brad Wilkerson fanned four times apiece and Cleveland's Grady Sizemore went down on strikes three times.
Mariners 2, Athletics 0 -- Jarrod Washburn pitched a three-hitter for his third career shutout, outdueling Joe Blanton and leading Seattle to victory in Oakland.
Washburn (1-2) struck out two and walked two in his first complete game since blanking Texas for the Angels June 22, 2005. Blanton (2-1) pitched a six-hitter for Oakland but gave up homers to Jose Guillen and Kenji Johjima.
Royals 4, Twins 3 -- David DeJesus and Mike Sweeney combined to send host Minnesota to its first four-game losing streak since last June.
DeJesus had three hits, including a home run, and Mike Sweeney also homered in Kansas City's victory.
Tigers 6, White Sox 2 -- Chad Durbin struck out a career-high nine in eight innings and Magglio Ordonez had three hits and three RBIs against his former team as Detroit won in Chicago.
Ivan Rodriguez also had three hits for the Tigers, who won for just the third time in seven games.
Angels 9, Devil Rays 1 -- Gary Matthews Jr. and Garret Anderson hit two-run doubles, and host Los Angeles took advantage of three Tampa Bay errors to score four unearned runs in a rout.
John Lackey (3-2) allowed a run and seven hits in six innings, striking out seven and walking two. He is 7-1 against the Devil Rays.
Giants 6, Dodgers 4 -- Barry Bonds hit his 741st career homer, a three-run shot in the first inning, Pedro Feliz had the go-ahead homer in the sixth and visiting San Francisco beat Los Angeles for its first seven-game winning streak in nearly three years.
Bonds has homered in three of his last four games, moving him within 14 of tying Hank Aaron's career record.
Pirates 4, Astros 3 -- Adam LaRoche, his average down to .092, grounded a winning single into left field in the 16th inning and host Pittsburgh rallied after blowing a two-run lead in the ninth and handed Houston its fifth consecutive loss.
Phillies 9, Nationals 3 -- Jon Lieber limited visiting Washington to two runs in six innings, Chase Utley was 5 for 5 with three RBIs, and Philadelphia won its fifth straight.
Cubs 9, Brewers 3 -- Derrek Lee and Cliff Floyd each got four hits, Ted Lilly (2-2) pitched seven strong innings, and host Chicago broke loose to beat Milwaukee after Brewers ace Ben Sheets was hurt.
Cardinals 5, Reds 2 -- Albert Pujols hit a two-run, tie-breaking double to spark a four-run eighth inning and help host St. Louis beat Cincinnati for only its second victory in nine home games.
Rockies 11, Mets 5 -- Willy Taveras got five of Colorado's season-high 20 hits and the visiting Rockies snapped out of an offensive drought with a rout of New York.
Marlins 4, Braves 3 -- Miguel Olivo scored on a passed ball to cap a four-run rally in the ninth inning against Tim Hudson and Bob Wickman, and Florida beat Atlanta in Miami.
